Needing inspiration to get through first few days

It is nearing the end of day 1 of 14 days of a water fast. I have tried water fasting many times before only to give in usually on day 3 which I know is one of the hardest as the hunger tends to subside after that and the better feelings of well-being come. It has been a few years and I need to do this ultimately to end my compulsive eating problem. I've gone almost a week in the past allowing myself other liquids but that doesn't yield the same healing as water fasting does and I need this now more than ever for all of its benefits. I'm just looking for some inspiration/encouragement/support to help me get through these first few days, what has worked for other people. Also, I'm looking for any tips as what to tell people why i'm not eating at mealtime for those that I am not telling about this fast. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am so determined to complete this I just need some support.

Are you fasting to lose weight? you say that you want to end your compulsive eating so i'm guessing that you do.

For inspiration to keep up with your fast if your goal is weight loss?? Whenever you think about stopping the fast, put on some tight trousers/ t-shirt before eating, you wont want to eat when you can feel how tight your clothes are.
Think about how you want to be after the fast, instead of counting down the days till you can eat, count down the days till you'll be happier and healthier.

Hunger pangs should go by day 5/6 so stick with it, it does get easier.
If you don't want to explain yourself to people as to why your not eating:
  • tell them you have already eaten
  • tell them you are going for a meal later so cannot eat now
  • avoid company at mealtimes
  • tell them you are ill/feeling bloated
  • let them see you with food but discard it discreetly

Don't let other people prevent you from reaching your goal!

I'm fasting to be relieved from all of the negative effects emotionally and physically that I get from it. I am dying to regain healthy eating habits again and that's the most important thing. And so then I an feel good and eat healthy and run like I used to. And be generally happier and to clear my head.

Thank you for the response :]

Another thing: stay away from food and food prep areas. If there is a place at work where food is shared, try to avoid passing it. At least the first few days don't look at cookbooks or watch food network. Later on, you may find focusing on food a way to be part of the food culture without partaking, but in the beginning, you will need to distance yourself from food to avoid temptation. I know it's hard to believe now in the first couple days, but you will find that you won't be tempted by food later on in the fast. Also, it takes a while to get to ketosis, that is when your body switches to burning fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates from food you ate (usually at about the 48 hour mark on a water fast). Once you reach ketosis, it will get easier to not eat, hunger goes away...and you start getting results. Buy some ketone test strips to see if you're in ketosis. Once you reach that, it will give you more motivation. Whenever you find yourself hungry, come to this website and read the blogs and post in the forum. It'll take your mind off the hunger. also remember hunger comes in waves, builds in intensity and then fades away. Often, you can wait out the hunger wave and it'll go away.

How are you doing on your fast? I have used the excuse "I have a touch of indigestion" to avoid eating at social events while I was fasting, but works best is avoid social events altogether. To keep myself motivated I immerse myself in fasting blogs, forums, articles, books, youtube videos, etc. everyday during my fast.

Hi Bena, are you starting a fast or are you in the first few days? Welcome to the forum. I'm on day 1 of a 7 day water fast. I know 7 days doesn't sound as sexy as a 40 day fast or even a 30 day, but it's my goal. I'll be glad to exchange encouragement with you. Have you fasted before?

I agree with you. Fasting blogs, testimonials and vlogs help me too. I am also reading my Bible and taking time to re-organize my house. The closets could use my attention and under the kitchen sink could be a lot cleaner, not to mention changing my toe nail color etc..... Maybe If I had been busy doing these things on a regular basis I might not be overweight now. This is a crucial lesson for us because we must fill our time with other things instead of slamming snacks or even thinking about it. I want fasting to be a reconditioning of my entire mindset! I want to conquer this food addiction!
God speed with your fasting!

I LOVE to do housecleaning when I'm fasting, in particular, de-cluttering and getting rid of stuff. It is similar to a fast, because with a fast, I'm doing an internal house cleaning and getting down to the few things that I really need. With house cleaning, I'm trying to condense and get rid of excess baggage. Both make me feel good about myself when I'm finished, even if I don't get as much done as I wanted to. :P

I also like to read things that are going to either help me grow in some way or increase my knowledge. Things like how to books or else I'll immerse myself in a certain subject, such as gardening, by reading everything I can borrow from the library on the subject.

This fast, I've also taken some photographs of my body, too for motivation. I think that has really helped...not just for fasting but for realizing where I actually am. I think I have this image of what I think I look like in my head and it may not be an accurate picture. When I start eating again, I'm also going to photograph my food to keep myself more accountable.

Have you started your fast? How is it going? I've got a killer headache today.

Thanks for replying. Yup, that was me running at 10K last spring. I weighed 270 lbs 4 years ago. ;-) I work out every day and eat pretty clean these days.

So, I'm in day 4 of my fast...going well, although I had to take some diet pepsi yesterday...the caffeine withdraw headache was too much to bear for 2 days straight. Otherwise, things are good.

I still need to re-evaluate my relationship with food. During my last fast, I didn't think about food at all. This time, I seem to be fixated on anything and everything! I'm not worried...I stick to something when I start it; it's just frustrating to keep thinking of food! lol

Congrats on your weight loss raidiogirl! That is wonderful to make such a transformation in your life. And completing a 10K, that's fantastic. I know what you mean about those caffeine headaches. I have given up caffeine for the express purpose that I wanted to be able to intermittent fasting whenever I wanted. Unfortunately, I have had one or two cups per day since Wednesday and now I'm craving it again. I was going to fast today, but ended up eating, therefore, I'll be fasting Sunday and Monday this week, and maybe more if needed. After this fast, I'm done with caffeine. Those headaches are killer.

Oh, what was your catalyst for deciding to lose weight? I notice in weight loss success stories, there is always this moment in which the person realizes that she needs to make a change. For me, it was not being able to fit into my "fat" jeans. I lost and kept off 20 lbs for 12 years. Now that I've found fasting, I've tweaked my weight down 6 more lbs....it's just getting to maintaining those extra 6 that I'm working on with fasting now. How is your fast going?

Lenchik, thanks for the compliment. This is a GREAT forum. I feel that I have found a home here. Who needs facebook when you can find people who share your goals and are willing to share advice and experience with you. Are you joining us for a fast?

I am kind of mad at myself right now, because my husband offered to make me breakfast. I grew up in a family where food=love and it's hard for me to get past that some times. I didn't want to eat breakfast, particularly, but I didn't want to hurt my husband's feelings, either. So I chose to let him make me breakfast, which, sorry, honey, wasn't particularly good. So now, I pushed back the beginning of my fast until 9am this morning. I'm mad at myself because I was probably projecting my own feelings onto my husband. He probably wouldn't have cared if I had said, "No, thank you." to breakfast. Why didn't I? I'd be only 7 hours away from the first 24 hours down. Also, since I ate this morning, it's going to take some extra will power for me to not eat the rest of the day. Oh, and I had a cup of caffeinated coffee this morning. That's 5 days in a row with caffeine. I hope I don't get a withdrawal headache.

Day 7 for my water fast. So far, so good. Headaches cleared up the same day I drank the diet pepsi...guess it was enough to wean off from. I know me, I can't survive w/o coffee, so I'll be guzzling it down a few days after my fast. lol

My aha moment was when I was teaching public speaking at a Michigan university...and all my students kept giving speeches on drinking water (and its importance - they saw me guzzle can after can of pepsi...12 a day, in fact). They also liked to talk about physical activity, sedentary behaviour, etc. Those kids were on to something! ;-) Plus, I was 270 lbs...5 feet tall and 5 feet wide...I was a cube!!! lol

I try to fast for 14 days once a year. My body really sticks to set points...and no matter what I do, I can't lose weight. So, this is my chance to lose some weight and to re-evaluate my relationship with food. What sucks is, just before fasting, I went for metabolic testing in Toronto and was told I should eat AT LEAST 2040 calories a day...when I'm not losing while eating 1400-1800 a day, how the hell can I increase my caloric intake??? Then, they also told me to decrease my gym time...Oh no they didn't! lol So, needless to say, I don't know what to do once I end the fast. Part of the reason I LOVE fasting is that I don't ever have to think about food...or be consumed by it!

Hey Radiogirl, How do they do metabolic testing? Obviously they were wrong when they told you that. And why would they tell you to decrease your gym time? That's just bizarre. About set points, I read that the way you decrease your body's set point is to lose 10% of your body weight and to keep that off for 6 months, then your body will reset it's set point...then you can lose another 10%. I can't remember the name of the book that I read that but it makes sense.

My suggestion for once you end the fast, drink lots of water, eat "mindfully", chew well, focus on your food when you're eating, don't watch tv and eat, always drink a glass of water 30 min before meals, eat mostly plant based whole foods. Focus your diet on fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans. Get into the habit of intermittent fasting once a week for a day or two. Use the "notebook diet", after your fast ends, eat very healthy and balanced diet, but record in a notebook everything that you are craving that you wish you could have. The day before your next weekly fast, consume everything on your list, which works out well to be your pre-fast fatty meal AND your body is able to enjoy the foods that you are craving even longer in anticipation of you eating them. Plus your body begins to trust that it will have what it's craving, just not right away. Hope that helps.

I do enjoy the break from food issues that fasting gives me. I know what you mean.
Take care!

Hi Lisa,

I had to go to Cleveland Clinic in Toronto. They hooked me up to a breathing mask, which measured my V02 and some other gasses that basically tells us what my metabolism is. I have a feeling it's that high b/c I take thyroid hormone and I'm on a high dose, borderline hyperthyroid, which I feel best at anyways. It cost $175...it's usually more, but I told them I didn't need the follow-up with a dietitian, but would see mine back home (I was there for a conference and didn't have time for another appt).

They said I was starving my body, long-term, but overexercising and under eating. And here, I thought 1800 cals was too much! I will say that once I calculate what I burn in the gym, I'm usually at a caloric deficit...but shouldn't I lose weight if that's the case??? So frustrating. It's a good thing I like to work out! lol

Interesting about set points...the thing is...I lost a massive amount of weight within a year (and have kept 80% off for the past 3 years). Since then, I can't lose...

I like your suggestions re: eating after the fast...but I already do all of that. I even gave up wheat (I lost 10 lbs within a few days and kept it off). I will admit I don['t do IF. For me, the worst part of fasting is the first day or 2, so when I get that far, I want to keep going! lol

Thanks for the chat...it's really nice to be able to share this with someone who doesn't think I'm nuts for fasting! lol

Well, they are incorrect anyway. Starvation only begins when the reserves are gone. LOL That's why fasting works because you nourish your body off the reserves in your body fat. That must be frustrating to have lost so much weight and not be able to get under it. I would think that probably you need to do something drastic. Such as a longer fast. How was your experience last time you fasted 14 days? Still, keeping off most of the weight you lost is quite an accomplishment. And besides, exercise doesn't burn as many calories as you think. When the treadmill says you burned 200 calories in an hour, for example, you have to consider what would your burned sitting on your butt watching TV and subtract that. You'll find that the hour on treadmill only nets you maybe 30 calories more than watching TV. Pretty sad, huh? I still know that I ran and ran and ran and only got rid of my belly and thigh fat through fasting and it wasn't just fasting a few days, either. It was 16 days. I love running, but I know that fasting is more effective.

By the way, I had the same idea about intermittent fasting...why would I want to do that because the first days are the hardest...but actually, the more you fast, the easier it gets. Plus your body adapts much easier and you have fewer detox symptoms.

That's kinda what I thought too...how can I be starving with 60-80 pounds of fat on me??? lol

I love running too! I was trapped inside my body for so many years, that now, I just love to jump around and move freely...it's wonderful! Speaking to that, I've found that since beginning this fast, I am so much more comfortable in my yoga poses...I'm able to bend deeper, etc. I guess it's cuz I don't have so much fat in the way! lol

Spoke with my doc today...I'm glad she supports me in fasting. She gives me kudos when I see her and I'm fasting, and says she could never do it...lol I asked if she would send me for electrolyte blood work, which she did. She's also getting my liver function and creatinine checked...I'm curious to see the results, especailly the sodium one. I sweat, even with easy workouts. Plus, I do a steam bath every day, so I know I lose more sodium than most people.

About IF, the reason I'm afraid to do it is because I am a weightlifter and according to the research, you lose mostly muscle mass for the first few days of a fast, until ketosis kicks in. For me, this doesn't happen until day 3...I wonder if I fasted for 24 hours only, if that would spare my muscle mass...I'll have to look into that!
