Hi everyone!

I am starting a water fast today, Monday, June 11. I can't sleep...that is why I am up at 3 am:(

Anyway, I would love someone to join me!!! I plan to fast through until this sunday the 17th and pick it up again for 5 more days the following monday. So, I guess this is more of an intermittent fast maybe? I just have plans with my family(both inlaw and my fam) next saturday for Father's day. Does anyone have suggestions on this? My family is just a bit against fasting and I am doing this to lose a bit of weight and detox my body. My fam is overweight and just do not seem to understand the idea of fasting unfortunately:(

Anyway, would anyone like to join me? Also, would it be bad to break this short fast halfway to eat for one day and then go back right into it? I really want to have the same benefits of a 10 day fast straight through(the longest fast that I have ever done is 10 days). I truly hope this would not deter my efforts. On the sunday that I take a break, does anyone have suggestions to help me to continue to detox? I don't want to eat junk that day and ruin all that i have accomplished. I was thinking of trying to eat a salad or soup of some kind and keep it low calorie.

Thank you to all in advance! This site is such an amazing network of support! thank you so very much to you all:):)

Absolutely! Hi and welcome :),

I guess we're in different time zone and I started my fast at 7 pm last night. I was blogging about my fast but then the server went down and I couldn't update my blog. Boy, have I been having withdrawals! I was fasting since last Sunday until Friday (the easiest fast ever so far) but then we had an unplanned huge huge celebration over the weekend, so I'm resetting my fast and will luckily join you. I will probably drink some green juice along with water, haven't decided yet. Sorry for this OT. Amen :).

It's good that you've decided to have some food on Sunday but I think you are not going to need it with all the support of people over here (incl. me). And if you really need some food on Sunday, then choose from low carb spectrum of food as it will be much easier to get your body into ketosis again.

Good luck and don't worry about anything. First day or two may be a little bit unpleasant, but hey.. if you don't let any negative emotions take over your determination to fast, then you're going to make it and come out of it as a new better person! Remember, your body - your temple, believe in yourself and take it as an enjoyable experience. Keep us updated how it's going.

Hi, I am also fasting from last night to next Saturday, so I will check in on this thread each day :) I was thinking though, that you might want to keep in mind that being out in a social setting can be a tricky way to break a fast. I am mostly thinking of the potential for stomach upset if the fast is broken on the wrong (in terms of stomach ache) food? Maybe you are lucky enough not to have this issue when ending a fast, but, for me, I can only eat fresh fruit at first, & even that is sometimes too much! Just a thought. Other than checking up on the best thing to eat for your short "break", it sounds like you should be ok. Everyone have a great first day!

Good morning ladies, how was your first day?
@sailormariebliss: Good to have you here. Why are you fasting if I may ask?

Day 2 shortly after I woke up - It's raining, loving it! My weight's dropped by 1.8 kg since yesterday morning. Stomach is a bit louder. Other than that, I've been feeling relaxed most of the time :). I expect I should enter ketosis during the day as I did some intensive full-body depletion workout with weights yesterday.

Quick question: My skin broke out one week ago. It went from ok to not so ok and quite painful and irritated. Is it possible I have a reaction because I started drinking ACV daily some time ago?

Have a great day and keep going strong!

Good morning!
First day went well, but then my first 2 days are usually fairly easy. I have trouble getting past 3.5 days, so that's one of the reasons I'm trying to go a bit longer. I know it's not ideal to decide on the number of days first, so I'm just going to fast until my body gives me some feedback saying stop (or I run out of willpower!).
Shant~ I've been doing intermittent fasting (3 days a week) for the past 2 months. My reasons are to reduce any inflammation (I have autoimmune issues), which I read can be done with IF, to detoxify, which is why I'm choosing active fasting, &, last, but certainly not least, to lose some weight! I find the fasting is like a much needed rest for my brain from making food/eating decisions constantly. I often feel like a calculator stuck in the on position. I find I feel so much better on the fasting days, as opposed to the eating ones :)
Well, I hope everyone else had a smooth first day, & I will be checking in from time to time (at least 1X a day).

Hi Ladies! I am so excited that you have decided to join me! I definitely need the support! and i hope i can do the same for u2:)I did really well yesterday....UNTIL I got my period and horrid cramps. I get them really bad and sometimes throw up if I don't take medication. So, I ate something to take the pain killer with:( So, today is my official start. I'm sorry!!! I truly wanted to start yesterday.

SailorMarieBliss, thats great about the intermittent fasting. My interest of that actually drew me to this site...and then i decided to do a longer fast:) Has it helped alot with inflammation? I have arthritis in my knee from multiple knee surgeries and was hoping to help that also. How long have you been doing 3 days per week?

Shant, is that apple cider vinegar? I am not sure if it can make you break out...this may sound crazy, but I actually use ACV as an astringent, in my shampoo to make my hair shiny and take it in the morning on an empty stomach also. I truly feel it is a cure all! But, then i also know every BODY is different and may have different reactions to it. how long have you been taking it? o and yay for the drop in weight!! congrats:)

Going strong until the end now...so sorry for the delay

sailormariebliss: I hope you get positive results with it. Re. your 3.5 days. Don't take it as a rule of thumb and we can get you past those 3.5 :)). Similarly here though. I can easily last up to 5th - 6th day and then, not that I feel bad or anything - quite the opposite, I just get that one tiny thought about food and possibilities out there that I allow myself to break the fast. I suspect it's caused by some transcendental powers, or something.. kidding. Self-control needs to be trained.
As for ACV, as Kelly already said, it is apple cider vinegar.. I got myself non-fermented one and am drinking it with mineral water to reduce potential food cravings? I don't know actually. I just found out it tastes nice with stevia and contains no calories.

kelly22222: Do not apologise! The important thing is that you've started and that you did what you had to do and I'm glad you feel better today. How much do you want to shed off? Do you work out? IF with exercise is very efficient. I just read your reply in another thread where you asked Lisa S. if one can get into ketosis during juice fasting. From my experience, you can. It depends on what you drink and how active you are. I start with low carb green juices/or with almond milk variations for taste buds :), and am active. Full- body weight training is a great glycogen depleting activity and a good way to get into ketosis. Then, once you decide to have a carb rich cocktail, you can work it off quite quickly. Just don't overdo it. I don't drink fruit juice mainly because I would get cravings.

My motto for today: Today is the new tomorrow.

Hi Shant! Thanks so much for responding so quickly...I can't stop reading all of these messages in the forum...so much info to absorb. I was excited to see your response since I hadn't logged off yet :)

Anyway, TY so much for being understanding of my delayed start. I am READY today!! Thank you for the info about juicing and ketosis also. I have a juicer and was considering doing that only if I was feeling awful from cramps still today. But, I really wanted to do just water. I am hoping not to have to resort to that until I am coming off my fast.

I actually LOVE lifting. It has been my passion for yrs now. But, I also love yoga, rock climbing, running and being generally active. hence my knee probs(yrs of soccer, cross country and skiing i will blame them on being a mess:( I want to workout while I am on this fast. The past fasts that I have been on, I had never lifted and just stuck to cardio. For this time, I have read some interesting stuff about lifting and fasting when combined. So, I wanted to try it out.

Do you lift heavy or light circuit style when you fast? Do you feel that you have the energy to really push yourself? I would like to lose 20-25 lbs. I am 5'3" at 147.5 as of yesterday. I have no clue how that weight crept up on me. I was shocked when I weighed myself yesterday...as I avoid the scale like the plague. I have always been fairly athletic/active. so this was shocking to me. My ideal weight would be 115...but, I want to see how I feel at 125;as I don't necessarily believe in a number as a goal. I am going more by feeling and how my clothes fit...oh and measurements!

I love your motto!! today IS the new tomorrow. have a beautiful day :cheer:

Thanks, it was so good to read you. Hehe.. I'll tell you what, that weight on might be some muscle mass added, considering you're so active. You just retain plenty of water, jeans got shrunk and because you were busy under barbell, you put on LBM. I could lie to myself like this forever but skin fold never lies.. Good luck with reaching your goal. I believe whenever you jump on that scale from now on, it's going to motivate you to keep going strong!

Well, before fasting it's great to do circuit with more reps. Speaking of myself, as soon as I got through the first couple of days of fasting I usually lifted heavy/less reps and did a short cardio afterwards. I had quite an amazing experience once. On my 7th??? day of fast I was able to lift even more than ever before. I think it was a mental thing because that day I went to the gym with the mindset that 'I'm going to push myself beyond my limits'. It actually works with anything in life... "Life is a mind game" holds much truth in it. Regarding water fasting and weight training. If the blog section already worked, you could check in my blog that I never consumed much juice. I kept the calorie intake low, because I usually had just one large glass of green juice (sometimes with beet root or tomato) in the evening and some almond milk with coconut water during the day.
As for now, I can't go to the gym. I had an injury and shouldn't even train at home but I couldn't resist so I did my best to do something at home yesterday. Can't wait to get back there though. It's great to hear you're such an enthusiast!

Have a fab and easy day

This is great, as I've never managed to see one of these group fasts in time to really fast along with anyone before! You ladies are so active & inspiring, too :) I hope some of it rubs off! I especially need to give up a bit of my cardio time, & get back to doing some weights. Probably light circuit to re-start.

I had actually lost quite a lot of weight over the past year. In fact, it's embarrassing to say how much, as I can't believe I had gained so much! I had experienced the worst autoimmune flare up of my life, which lasted a horrible 3.5 years, & went from a lifelong gym-rat/runner, to almost needing a walker just to get around. I was put on round after round of steroids to bring down the inflammation, but nothing was working until I just got fed up with the hideous weight gain, & decided to cut out all white flour/white sugar & try to stay with low glycemic index stuff for carbs (I was already a longtime vegetarian). Lo & behold, the inflammation went down to the point were I was able to hit 7 miles in an hour on the elliptical most nights! Compared to hobbling like an 80 yr old lady, the improvement totally convinced me that food/fasting is very powerful medicine! So, after the holidays, when I hit a plateau in my weight loss, I happened to read about IF, & decided to give it a try. I've been doing the 3.5 days for 4 weeks now. I try to go by how my clothing fits for results, & weigh myself 1-2X a month, as I have fought against an eating disorder for most of my life, & had been hospitalized in the past, so, for me, if I let myself use the scale too often, I will become mentally obsessed with the numbers to an unhealthy extent. Part of my hope with IF is, that if I fast for half the week, maybe I can let go of my obsessive calorie/macro-counting on my "eating days", & just focus on eating nutrient dense, healthy foods, & maybe even enjoy them :)

As far as starting a day late, I have done that one week, as I began to get an actual migraine, & needed to take my meds with food, so it is completely understandable. My delayed fast went just as well as the others, so I'm sure you will do fine! Also, I haven't been having much joint inflammation lately, so I'm not really able to tell about the IF effects on that yet, but will keep track of results in that area.

Do either of you have issues with nausea, during fasting? I can get quite nauseous at times, & it can be tough to deal with at work. Other than that, I'm feeling ok this evening. My 5 step elimination cycle got interrupted earlier today, so I may need to do another one. Hope you both have peaceful, rewarding nights, & keep up the great work,

M

Good Morning ladies!

Yay! So, I completed 1 entire fast day - haha, gotta celebrate the small accomplishments in life, right? :)
Shant-I seem to have been convincing myself I have loads of LBM for awhile now-hahah I am putting my foot down and being a realist for now though. I am hoping you are right about the scale going down and feeling motivated! I am looking fwd to that. I will wait to weigh myself until tomorrow morning tho. I have a bit of excitement for that cause it has go to go down from water weight at least :)

Wow! that is truly amazing about being able to lift more on your 7th fast day!! I am going to try that out. now that is inspirational. I do believe almost everything in life is mental. Funny-I just read this quote the other day:
"What you are, is what you have been. What you'll be is what you do NOW." -Buddha
I seem to keep lists of quotes like that that i find. I hope it absorbs into my new system of beliefs somehow guess:) I will have to try beet and tomato juice. I love bloody marys(haha...not good for detox:P so anything that could taste remotely like that, i am all for! how come you can't go to the gym now? working out is my obsession...i go CRAZY when I can't move. I am so sorry you have an injury deterring your efforts. :( I hope you heal soon! I will send you some positive/healing vibes when i workout today!!

M- please don't be embarrassed by the weight gain!! I do have to admit-I feel a bit the same...but staying healthy is hard work. And you are putting the effort in. thats what counts right? I don't know much about autoimmune flare ups...sounds awful though:( good for you on giving up white flour/sugar! I truly believe those both are addictive "drugs"!! I have a bit of a gluten intolerance and sugar seems to make my heart beat faster than caffeine (wierd-does that happen to you at all?). Anyway, that is so hard to kick...you should be proud of yourself! So in the past 4 wks have you seen a greater difference in how your clothes have been fitting? We don't have to talk about the scale-i completely relate to that crazy obsession-ugh, I wish i didn't have a bit of that too.

Oh, and i do have waves of nausea also. the only way I have found to avoid that slightly is by not drinking water for a bit and it seems to go away-but when i am not feeling that way i try to get as much water as possible. Sometimes seltzer water helps a bit also. I also take Glucomannan. It's just a dietary fiber. It may be in my head, but really seems to reduce hunger pains and the nausea. Let me know if you try it!! I have never tried it, but i have heard wheatgrass tablets may help with this also?

Hello from the other end :)

Kelly is on day 2 and Marie with me on day 3, am i correct? Girls, we rock, huh? Congratulations to both of you :)

Kelly: why don't you get yourself wheatgrass powder instead of pills to dilute it in water? It's not particularly tasty but when you decide to drink juice some day, it wil be great (yummy yummy.. Sarcastically) addition. As for taking fibre supplement, I think I read somewhere one should take some psyllium husk prior fasting to help clean the colon, but not during the fast itself as to give digestion full rest. I understand it might reduce your hunger though. Hunger will disappear sooner or later anyway. Thanks for the lovely quote and have fun at the gym. I'll join you next week after I return from my trip.

By the way, I won't have a regular access to Internet from Sunday to wednesday but will do my best to check on you. Do not even think of giving up....hehe.

Marie: actually no, i never got issues with nausea and I must admit I don't even do those elimination cycles. I believe that just going outside and look around to see the natures beauty helps me eliminate those toxins :)). But I may be wrong as I have never got to the point of having the healing crisis (except feeling extremely mentally slow and blurred one day). Was your auto-immune breakdown related to the eating disorder? I will google it to understand you more as I have no idea what you were going through. Congrats on beating it and take a good care of yourself.

I've been suffering most of my life from binge eating (I was born food oriented and always hungry I suppose :). I should also try not to weigh myself each day but as for now, it keeps me motivated when I see the number going the right direction. I might reconsider it doing it so religiously. Thanks for reminding me of it, M!

Chin up for the rest of your day, ladies, and be happy!

I gotta run. Till tomorrow!

Good morning on days 3 & 4!
I had a bit of a rough evening/night. Lots of hip pain (joints) & VERY achy legs :( Did an extra elimination cycle, & I must say it probably kept me from breaking the fast to take pain meds! Although, I also feel that fresh air & nature are often very helpful too! After the EC, I went outside to sit on my porch & watch the rain.

Gotta run, as I'm late for work, but just wanted to pop in & give encouragement. We can do this! I am hoping to go til Saturday, which will be my longest fast so far by 2 days. It's starting to look possible. Thanks to both of you!

Have a great day, m

Hey everyone! Just got back onto the site for the first time in 11 days. I read through this blog and was jealous I'm not joining you. It reminds me how much I love fasting and everything about fasting. As far as people not being supportive of fasting: I think it's because it's never talked about in the news or such. I am finding that as I get more experienced with fasting and have the courage to share my experiences with people that they are way more supportive, curious and interested than I expected. Especially when you tell them after the fact and when I lift up my shirt and show off that I have no baby bump LOL. I love the way you are supporting each other and I will be reading this blog and my thoughts will be with you and supporting you and living vicariously through you all in your fasts. One thing I do pledge is that I will fast again BEFORE I eat unhealthy foods to see if there is a difference in the detox experience with clean eating. Usually my pattern is that my weight starts to creep up, my belly starts to get that bloating experience and then I think, well, I'm going to fast, so let me just eat pizza. LOL. But I've been raw since May 29 with only a couple small amounts of cooked food (once I finished a pasta and cheese dish that was sitting in a pan on the stove that my kids had cooked, that is the one I regret--the other two were healthy vegan whole food based) and since I've been raw I've been mostly staying at my weight and eliminating several times per day and have not felt the need for fasting. But I am with you in spirit! Keep it up.

I woke up irritated because I woke up LATE.... I hate being in a hurry in the morning. I quickly made myself a lil prettier as not to expose myself to public embarrassment and did the usual morning chores. Everybody was bad and everything for wrong until I finally left the house. Sunshine. Warmth.
I'm not going to run around the bush. I have a confession to make - I f*ed it up today. Exactly 3 hours prior end of day 4 and didn't stop until now. Eating nuts as the last "meal" at the moment. It's weird, today I bought new batch of veggies, washed them neatly and packed. Prepared almond milk from almonds I soaked in water overnight. Made myself first drink of the day - almond milk with coconut water, ginger, kurkuma and cinnamon as i convinced myself it's my new coffee substitute.. then I started preparing desserts for guests tonight and bang. I ate and ate. I also made a large sandwich WITH proscuitto, gruyere cheese and fresh spinach for myself. Can't believe my stomach is so well trained that I don't feel sick nor bloated afterwards, except my belly looks like a sink upside down. After I feasted, I was thinking if the last food i put into my mouth should be almond milk or nuts. Quality instead of quantity, right? I decided to drink almond milk... What just 3 hours ago had seemed to taste so rich and creamy and lovely suddenly tasted like water. So I went for nuts.. more than 1/2 of the 200g bag of mixed nuts (macadamia, almonds, pecans, cashew, hazelnuts and walnuts) and just finished them.

I don't regret being a pig. I have a goal and I will go until I reach it. What bothers me is the fact that I was in ketosis already and could have at least do some strength training so that all the carbs would go into muscles I wasted. Had I known...

M, sorry if I was talking too much about food, I was just honest. Go on. Saturday is near :). Now who's the one who should check on the others, huh? Definitely not me!

Lisa, I'm glad you're back. Your life has taken on an entirely new level, I see. Im a bit jealous of your new sense of self-control and freedom that it gives you. Wish I was there already, too.

Edit: Oh my oh my... I will be fasting since 10 pm tonight as I decided to enjoy food I prepared in a good company. I decided to lock the scale in the cellar. I decided today was good as another reference that I can be fasting without problems but I tend to give in without thinking. And that even if I don't have cravings at all, during the first 5 days I should avoid contact with the kitchen tools and sweet creamy looking stuff. Thank God I didn't buy chocolate for nephew today.

Lisa- it's good to have you back! Your posts are always so inspirational :) It sounds like you are achieving the diet that you have been aspiring to. Congrats! I hope to someday be at the same place.

Shant- I think the fact that we start another fast after ending the last one is what's most important. And, as the fast doctor says, it's important not to set the length of a fast beforehand, as it can then cause you to override your internal feedback. I'm jealous of the fact that you can eat that much variety straight off of a fast! I always have stomach issues even with fresh melon or juices :(

As for my fast, I have had just an incredibly uncomfortable day. My head has been hurting worse & worse as the day goes by, I feel dizzy & weak, & my joints are killing me. We had a health fair today at work, & I had my blood done, & my blood sugar was 64. The lady doing the screenings almost had a fit! Well, maybe that's why I feel so much worse than usual? My issue is, I have an incredibly physically & mentally demanding job, & I KNOW I won't be able to work in this condition through another day, so I will probably break this fast tonight. It is still almost a full day longer than I've done before. I think next time I want to do a 5+ day fast, I'll do the first 3 days at work, & hit the 4th & 5th on the weekend. Ugh, I only hope I make it home without starting to vomit (sorry if TMI).

I'll update later with whatever happens.

Just a quick update this morning,
I ended up stopping the fast around 4:30 yesterday. I realized that, while all the discomfort was undoubtedly a good & healthy healing crisis, I wasn't going to be able to get through another day of work that way, & I had felt steadily worse as the hours went on & I waited to come out of it.
So, I will be doing my usual 72 hrs of fasting next week if anyone else's schedule works that way. I'll most likely go from Tuesday (6/19) evening/night, til fast breaking on Saturday (6/23)

Kelly22222- hope you are well, & have received good benefits from your fast!

Shant- Do you have a plan to re-start immediately, or do you like to just re-start based on your biofeedback?

Lisa- I find myself thinking more & more about the possibility of going raw. I know I'm not ready yet, but I do try to add more raw food into my diet over time. Would you ever consider doing a post/article with some of your favorite recipies &/or a sample days menu? I'm sure you are busy enough without such requests, but I'm just saying it would be welcome if you ever did :) Also, do you have any favorite raw food websites or boards?

Hope you all have a peaceful & rewarding day!

Hi Ladies! So sorry I didn't have a chance to login yesterday. I had to travel for work and was pretty exhausted.Marie-I completely relate to your job stress! I feel the same. Sometimes it is good with fasting because I really do not have time to eat!! I definitely will join you next week! I plan on breaking the fast saturday night...or sunday morning. depending how I feel. Then I would like to go back into it monday.

Shant-no worries. PLEASE don't bit yourself up about this! I know I am the same way with food. I truly wish I had some self control. It's crazy how we can have such control to not eat for days while fasting, but the 2nd I eat food again, I seem to go a little crazy. I have convinced myself that I will not do that this time. Sometimes this works. I do believe it is all mental like you had said before. I plan to meditate and be more conscious....but any suggestions from you guys I would love to hear!

Lisa-I am jealous of your self control also! I tried doing raw for awhile. I actually got this book which i love if you guys are interested:

I love it because it is super easy. No weird equipment or super unusual ingredients.

Anyway-I hope you all are doing well today. I am feeling ok. I haven't really worked out much...which i am a bit disappointed in myself for that. This has been a fairly lazy fast for me:( I have been super tired tho. I guess I am listening to my body...but at the same time, I want my body to be stronger and be able to move more and detox even more!! I am hoping to make next week even better! I plan on doing the fasting weeks for as long as it takes me to reach my goal. So, I will definitely be checking in on here. Hopefully everyday unless something happens with being too busy like yesterday. YAY! thank goodness it is friday right? :):)
