Hi everyone! wow! i missed alot this weekend with all of these posts! So wonderful have so many of us doing this together. So, happy monday fast day to those of you that are starting up again :)

I don't want to miss anyone so i will just say a general BIG THANK YOU to all of you that responded to my posts. you guys are ALL keeping me motivated! and welcome Erin! I am excited to hear you are on board also. I actually would love to try to become completely Paleo or primal. I was vegetarian for over 15 yrs and just started eating chicken again in the past month. I know that may sound insane to some, but I have major stomach probs and decided to try something new by giving up grains and adding in protein...I have had a ton of luck with it and seem to feel miserable when i do eat grains now(like this past weekend -ugh!). Marie-I hear you about this weekend. I ate junk also. I am trying not to beat myself up about it and just get back on track today too. so we are in this together! Erin, I like the idea of 4 fast days, 2 raw and one notebook. I think i will try that out with you if you don't mind! I have been eating chicken, but i think i will stick with the raw nuts for a bit. I love nuts and being veg for so long, i don't really NEED meat. I just was trying to gain muscle and honestly, it was easier when i did go out to eat. But then I feel I am drawn to extremes at times. I believe in protein but also want to eat wild caught fish...free range chicken...etc. there is just sooo much health info out there...at times i just feel so confused by it all!

anyway, good luck everyone! I am excited to see how this week pans out:)

Kelly, I'd LOVE if you joined in with me while I try the "Notebook diet". (Nothing in the notebook so far  ) Like I said, "Fast-5", which is a feeding window of 5pm - 10pm has been my lifestyle for years, so I am VERY used to fasting everyday. A complete day is not hard at all for me. Whats trying is the 4 days in a row. ;)

I love the primal "WOL"...and actually its essential to my lifestyle since Im gluten and soy-free. I'm not left with MUCH to eat as it is...the only grain I eat is rice(once every 2 weeks or so), and I try to go easy on dairy as well.

I also know EXACTLY what you mean by reading so much that it becomes confusing. I LOVE different types of nutrition and eating...ideas that are very "against the norm" seem to catch my attention the most. I find them challenging and want to try them all out! I love to hear and interact with people who are willing to test things out and are accepting of alternative eating lifestyles (like all of you!)

Lisa - Whats strange is I seem to have MORE energy when I fast, and I seem to want to run MORE during my fasting days. I always attributed it to the fact that I was eliminating my food allergies and felt my best! I'm sure had I tried a 10 fast (as you have) I'd be "hitting the wall" as well.

I am starting a 5 day water fast today as well. I just found this forum, and I am glad I did! Erin, you eat just about the same way I do. I pretty much eat in an 8 hour window (2pm to 10pm) each day, so Day 1 has been a breeze so far. Except for the caffeine headache, I'm hoping it will go away by the time I go to bed.

Hi Everyone,
Yesterday, I ran 7 miles than biked 15 and when I got home from work, I felt a low blood sugar from probably all the honey I was eating...and I walk in the front door and there is a pan of lasagna sitting on the table...so I ate some. Then, because I bought these freshly baked bagels from Wegman's I ate TWO of them spread with hummus and sprouts. Can I just say Food Orga$m? Or will that be censored?

So, today is Day 1 of my three day juice fast. LOL. I had two cups of tea this morning (my fancy teas) and then I just decided that I'm going to put away my honeys, my tea cup, and my teas somewhere it is difficult to get to and just stick to juice. So far today, other than my tea, I juiced 4 oranges in the citrus juice. Then I made another juice with about 9 carrots (maybe a pound of carrots)two apples and a handful of kale. That was a delicious juice. I am feeling a little constipated and bloated from the refined flour and the cooked food. I woke up feeling thirsty, which hasn't happened to me on raw food. Anyway, I'm going to give my starting point as 10 am because I had tea earlier and I don't want that to be part of my juicing. I had used teas my last three day fast because it was easier to do at work since I couldn't bring a juicer. Now, I have a 1 liter bottle and I will juice the night before enough juice to fill that up and that is what I will bring to work. I'll juice the night before and stick it in the freezer immediately.

Atticus - I love IF! And everyone is pretty used to my "eating schedule", I just say I feel best when I eat like this. Some people think its odd, but I'm getting used to explaining it. My weight stays in check when I do it (well, besides when I gained from the hypothyroid). But I think it's actually made the hypo better, IF'ing.

Lisa - that's hilarious - I experience the same thing! Food tastes so good to me, it's a curse! Where I'd mess up with juicing is my "black or white" thinking, I have an "all or nothing" mentality. Eating even a minuscule of anything leads to "negotiating eating". Which means, I'll push the envelope if I were to juice. It's easy to allow "slip ups" because I'm not completely fasting. When I water fast, there is no gray area - I eat NOTHING. So it's easy to stick to the guidelines. If I'm left up to decision making, I'm completely impulsive. And impulse leads to disaster for me! If I know there IS no wiggle room - then I'm destined to only do it the right way. That's why I love fasting.

I did great yesterday, lost 2 pounds! :) I didn't run, or it would have been more. I'm running 4 miles today - feel great so far. The plan is to just keep busy. I'm high energy and GO GO GO so I just need to keep me with things to do. My goal for Saturday is 140. Totally doable! I'm hoping to be at 135 by the end of this month. I look sickly at 127 (I'm 5'6 and larger framed) so I won't go past 130. I got down to 120 when I was training for a marathon - I never fasted but I ate all protein, I felt great but looked bony! :)

Erin-yay! i'm excited to try this out! I am hoping the raw food day will deter me from going overboard. that was definitely my prob last week when i was not fasting. I may try to do the raw food day just on 1 day and fast for 5. we'll see how my willpower goes. i hear you about the intolerance for gluten and soy...my stomach problems seem to be aggravated by those also. yay for your 2 lb loss! i will be weighing myself tomorrow. I hope i have good results.
chelsea girl, i added in organic coffee this morning per the link you sent! wonderful energy:):) i am curious to see if it gives me the same results as no coffee.
Lisa-thats great about your workout! yay to your first day of juicing :)

Atticus ..welcome:) how is your 2nd day going?

Marie and Shant, how are you doing? forgive me if you are done fasting! It's hard to keep track!Yay for so many people on here!

I am doing well...i do have a questions for you guys though. So, tomorrow is our company picnic. i am very worried about my will power. since it will be my 3rd day of fasting tomorrow, I am not really concerned about hunger. As that seems to go away for me by the 3rd day. My concern is the social pressure. I don't want to give in. But, I am also not wanting to let anyone know i am on a fast. When I have done previous fasts, a lot of criticism from my coworkers has made the experience rough. I am curious how you guys have dealt with situations like this. What do you say for reasons that you are not eating? I am debating on whether i should just lie and say my stomach hurts or something rather than giving an explanation...I hate doing that though :( thoughts?

Kelly - I'd either tell them that you ate a huge breakfast, or tell them you water fast one day out of the month, or that your stomach has been acting up and youre afraid if you eat you may have an emergency :P I do that - or just say youre going out to eat later and you dont want to spoil your appetite.

The social pressure is temporary, once you "train" people that you have your own ways of doing things and that you wont be swayed - they accept it. Or say you just took a medication that the doc said not to eat on until 2 hours later.

Sometimes its easier to lie (I know that sounds bad) than to try and convince people of stuff they dont understand. You have to do this for YOU, dont eat out of guilt or anything else.

Stick to your guns, and be YOU!

Kelly - It's going great, thanks. I did suffer from a crazy headache and face numbness, most likely due to caffeine withdrawal. I did take a plain cup of green tea late in the day, it just became too much. So far today I am fine.

As far as hunger, none so far. I eat a pretty ketogenic diet normally, so I don't have much problem getting to the fat burning, This is my first real fast (besides IF), so I didn't know when to expect. But so far so good! Scale weight down 5 pounds this morning, and BF% down from 17.8% to 17.3%.

One thing I realized is that I use coffee, tea, food, etc. to break up my day. I have a highly technical job, and I'm finding the free time without food to be a bit too much! I just took a break and got in a 30 minute walk, so that helps.

So many great tips and ideas, everyone! I love reading you guys.

Kelly - great to hear, the Health Divas tips help a lot, especially when you need the energy to work. When I did my 2-week Health Divas fasting, I kept going to the gym almost every day, as usual. Much to my surprise, I ended up incredibly toned and with a lovely six pack. I recall one of the gym members thought I was the instructor as I walked in the studio class LoL :woohoo: Happy days, now I am back to the "one" pack tummy LoL

Erin – I’ve had hypothyroidism for most of my life now and I have been on daily thyroxin since. I also have a gluten intolerance and I am all in for the Paleo nutrition, although I throw in 0% fat yogurt and cottage cheese LoL

Erin, Kelly - I don't think I am suited for the Brad Pilon's EatStopEat lifestyle... too much thinking needs to go into it. I'd rather start a Health Diva fast and complete the whole 4 or 5 day thing in one go, which doesn't require too much planning.

I may join you in a couple of weeks. I have lunches, parties and dinners almost every day this and next week B)

So yup, looking at my calendar, can I join you guys on 2nd July? It will be a great detox after all this social indulgence!

Today I noticed we had to sign a disclaimer on eating disorders, etc. Well done you, Administrator, we don’t want to be associated with ProAnna sites!

Luckily I don’t weight myself, I don’t have the need. I am completely detached from the scales and haven’t owned one for the past 5 years! HOWEVER, I bought a Salter when I did the Health Divas fasting, as it was experimental I wanted to track the results, and at some point I found the rapid weight loss was quite rewarding in some ways. I was kind of looking forward to my weigh ins! Anyway, my last weigh in was after my holidays (first couple of days in June) to check if I was around the same weight. And I was. And that’s when I stopped. No dependency on scales. Phewww

Okay, off to continue watching the second half of England vs Ukraine, Eurocup… go England!! :woohoo:

Chelsea - July 2nd sounds good to me B) I have no prior plans, as of yet. ;) I plan on going again and again and again and cycling to keep weight in check. Im going to AT LEAST fast once a week, even when I get my (now 15 pounds to go) weight off. How do you like the Thyroxin? I was just diagnosed last week - and my doc has me on Synthroid to try out first. I've heard a lot of good things about Armour Thyroid, its natural. Im sorta scared to take hormone pills. Do you find the medication helps you feel better, and keep weight off? Im just now starting to feel the effects, better energy, etc.

Today I had chicken around 8pm. So tomorrow is back to water fasting. I guess I figured - "Hm..as long as I fast 4 complete days this week, why not mix it up". Plus I ran 4 miles, and that tends to make me hungry  So tomorrow and Thursday I'll fast - and maybe Friday do raw veggies, and Saturday fast again, and Sunday eat my notebook :woohoo: HAHA I mean, eat whats IN the notebook.

Hi Erin!

Nice plan, how does the notebook diet work?!

I have a pretty normal health/life with my daily thyroxin, they check it every 6 or 12 months in case they need to adjust the dose, but so far I've been on the same dose for over a decade. This issue does not affect losing or gaining weight as long as you are on thyroxin as prescribed by your doctor. My condition is for life. Yours sounds more like my sister’s, who has a (possibly) temporary deficiency. You really need a good doctor to check this. If you take a dose higher than needed, or take supplements without a doctor's supervision, you can have symptoms such as hyperactivity, anxiety and constant hunger/endless eating/weight gain. This is something an endocrinologist should help with. An endocrinologist would actually check ALL of your hormones first, including Vitamin D3, which is a hormone too! All hormones they need to be in perfect harmony. An imbalance could cause you immense damage and crazy weight fluctuations...

A second opinion? Like my blood test results could be wrong? I've wanted to have my other thyroid hormones tested, the T3 and T3 free and all those (I'm still learning all this stuff).

How will I know if I'm on a dose too high for me. So far I feel better.

I won't speak for Chelsea, but Thyroid problems can be fairly complex, and treatment based on only a standard blood test can be way off. You absolutely should have the additional tests for T3 and free. This is a good site for an overview: chriskresser.com/thyroid

Two long term site members have had thyroid issues and became very knowledgeable about the various facets of this. Kimberly and Meditating. Shortly I will reinstate the PM functionality so you could always drop them a note to ask their advice too. The beauty of Natural Hygiene is that it looks at the body as a whole system and the way back to good health are mostly simple steps such as living more simply, spending time outdoors in the fresh air and sunlight. Walking barefoot, eating plenty of raw food etc. Oftentimes it is the things that we do to our bodies which is not in accordance with natural law that end up causing various imbalances including hormonal. It is much harder to rectify the wrong doings of the past but each little step in the right direction counts. My main interest in life has always been about learning to undo past knots. To my amazement I found while studying craniosacral that even a mercury filling or root canal in a troublesome tooth can cause all manor of knock on effects. Some osteopaths believe that there are energetic pathways and correspondences between teeth and body organs. This is more common in Chinese medicine. Let us know how you progress with it.

Hi Erin! If you feel good, then it's all fine. Usually when a new condition is discovered, a second opinion is always welcome. I say this because an endocrinologist would not only check your thyroid in isolation but also a number of hormones which need to be balanced out. Some endocrinologists would prescribe thyroxin and others may also suggest lifestyle changes. Also the prescribed dose may vary from doctor to doctor.

A good doctor would want a new blood work 3 or 4 months after you start on your thyroxin and would look at your TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) concentration to check if your dose is high. TSH stimulates the production of FT4 and FT3. If the TSH present in your body is low / below the normal threshold, it means your body doesn't need thyroid production (TSH) because you are getting a high thyroxin dose, and that's when they may readjust it down.

Anyway, it seems that you are in good hands. Feeling good is the most important thing, so it's all positive :woohoo:

Thank you, David! I've been reading up on past threads throughout the site, and searching for hypothyroid. Information on the net either suggests fasting is detrimental to thyroid, or extremely beneficial (but that's the case with everything). My primary doc knows I periodically fast, and I'm not intimidated to experiment with myself. He's very interested, and because of my awesome lab work (with exception to thyroid) tells me to keep it up.

I believe in the power of the body and mind in terms of nutrition and healing. If I can "fix" a thyroid without medication, I want to try.

Thanks for the link - I'm off to read it now.

Today and tomorrow are planned water fasts.

I'm back! Can't believe it's so busy here. Hope everyone is doing well. Welcome new joiners & Hello everyone!

@Chelsea girl: Just remembered you asked about the caloric content of that Organic Miso Soup (Natural products from Japan)
Nutritional info: shiro miso 34.1%, rice miso 29.4, sweet potato starch enzyme 23%, sea salt 5.2%, wakame 3.7%, dried tofu 3.7%, leek 0.6, kombu powder 0.3.. Nothing about calories. Read that an average sachet of instant miso soup contains 30 cals and 900mg of sodium  , though. I tried to get something low in sodium but they don't sell it over here. Guess I'll have to make another trip the old good UK.

I've managed to fast for 5 full days when travelling, what a bliss! Since back, I'm eating again. Sigh..

Keep up the great work everyone!
