Hi - My name is Trini.

This is my first post in this forum.

So glad to meet like-minded people here.

I have until recently been doing daily Intermittent fasts for 12-18 hours.

My longest fast 'til date was about 36 hours.

I've done plenty of 22-24 hour fasts too.

This time however I really want to push myself and achieve this initial goal of
fasting for a week.

If I reach this goal - I would like to extend it to a complete 10 day fast - and if that is achieved - I will consider finally ending the fast at 14 days.

My reasons for doing this fast include:
- curbing my cravings and recent excessive binging,
- stop my snacking habit.
- clearing up my skin,
- hopefully experience some weightloss too in the process; start weight is at 110 lbs and 5 feet 4.5 inches.

Tomorrow will be Day 0 of fasting.
Start Date: September 21st 2012
7 day fast goal date: September 28th 2012
10 day fast goal date: October 1st 2012
14 day fast goal date: October 5th 2012

Any support will be appreciated.

I will be logging my journey on this thread.

Here's hoping for mental fortitude and patience -Cheers!

KittyKat (Trini),

Hi! Best wishes with your first one-week fast. I am in day seven as I write this. I will be beginning day eight tonight around 7:30 p.m.

Your goals seem very similar to mine as far as length of the fasts is concerned. I did several one- or two-day fasts, then a week, then ten days, and eventually worked up to two weeks and beyond. I have never fasted beyond three weeks before. This may be the time I do that. But if it's not, I will still be quite pleased at having fasted for this week, or for whatever length I end up fasting. I feel very good at the moment as long as I don't run too many miles at one time.

Good luck! :)

Aww Thank you Ock and Chelsea Girl for the immediate show of support.

Something that occurred to me right now - that I would like the opinions of you both;

Can I use toothpaste as part of my daily schedule during my water fast?

If not, can I use baking soda as an alternative?

Otherwise I'm considering salt water gurgles for my oral hygiene.

Normally I used to forego vitamins - but I'm also considering taking my multivitamin for fear of malnutrition if I DO achieve my 7-14 day fast ; what is either of your experience in this regard?

I think I noticed Chelsea Girl taking vitamins according to her blog?

Some help?

:) thanks.

Trini,

I always use toothpaste during a fast. I don't swallow any of it, of course.

As for vitamins, I have never used them during any fast. I have read that we have enough nutrients in our bodies to sustain us for quite some time. But I am not an expert in this area, and I am certainly willing to be wrong.

Thanks for the vote, Ock!! ah, you rock my friend!!

KittyKat - I did take multivitamins when fasting because I have a very hectic job in investment banking that demands loads of energy, attention, mental focus, tough negotiations and human interaction... and just need them to kick start my day when fasting..!

Here's is what I consider the rules of a safe fasting in MY case, of course everyone is different and you should always listen to your body... the listening can be done in many ways, my preferred one is by writing up your reactions and progress. It also helps with anxiety and it's quite refreshing "to vent" things out (as Shant would put it!). So, conclusion, what's good for me may not necessarily be the best for you: It took me, personally, a lot of trial and error to fine tune my fasting methods and own ideal duration. And I do keep learning. As as you could read from this week's fasting, I also had a few lessons to take away for the next one.

P.S. I don't think the toothpaste will make much of a difference to be honest, I brushed my teeth twice a day when fasting, just a routine.

Wishing you loads of success!

It's Day 0 of my 7 day fast.

Choosing not to take any supplements this week.

Woke up around half past 10 in the morning.
Followed my normal brushing routine with toothpaste.

It's a mellow morning.

No hunger pains - it's half past noon now.

I ate last at around half past 11 last night, so its been roughly 12 hours since.

I don't think I'll have too much of a problem fasting today.

I'm actually glad that I don't have to eat, since it's such a welcome break
from stuffing myself with all the processed and high carb' and high sugar junk I've been putting in me.

Will continue reading for a while.

9:20 pm
Day 0 of 7

I spent my afternoon napping, and was woken by my aunt at around 6.

I had to take her to the dentist today.

Left by 6:30 pm.

Spent about an hour at the dentist's and then spent another half hour
visiting a bridal exhibition that had opened in the neighbourhood.

Haven't really felt tempted to eat yet and not experiencing any cravings.

Felt some peristalsis of the intestines a while ago but it wasn't necessarily uncomfortable.

There were two or three instances where I had to consciously note that I was fasting:
1) watching my sister help herself to lunch
2) watching her have an apple later in the afternoon
3) watching my family help themselves to afternoon tea.

It wasn't such a bother since I immediately just occupied myself with some more reading or internet browsing.

I've always reserved my own meal timings from the rest of the family, which is earlier than they usually eat - therefore I'm no longer compelled to eat with them and they don't necessarily feel that they need to invite me to sit down.

I'm actually glad for this, since I can remain fairly autonomous and don't feel any additional pressure to sit down with them while they eat.

There is still a late dinner scheduled for everyone else, I'm going to either go to bed early, watch one of my shows on telly or work on my embroidery.

All in all, its been a good day. :)

12:21 pm;

I'm going to here on, refer to Day 0 as my Day 1 (just so i can give myself that psychological edge of being further along in my fast)

Therefore today would be start of Day 3 of 7

Yesterday the site was down, so I couldn't update.

I had a few cravings yesterday, especially while entertaining guests.

Decided I could crave all I want as long as I didn't put anything in my mouth.

Today - I felt a little lightheaded and a little nauseous after waking up.

Had to lie down for a bit in the living room, just to switch off for a bit.

I can't wait for Day 7 at this point - I've just realised how I use food as entertainment - and I've been craving a little 'entertainment'.

Boredom is the hardest thing to deal with it seems, the not eating is not so bad.

Spent a long time yesterday - reading fasting literature. So glad I did that.

Further consolidates my will to be done with this because I don't want to start from scratch all over again.

Food is a huge part of socialisation here - relatives and family always congregate around food. It's almost what everyone looks forward to. So it's a little odd to be socialising and not eating.

I hope today is smooth as the last 2 days.

Apologies for the site issues yesterday they were totally unexpected and out of my control. I understand about the boredom factor which I call listlessness hence the importance to keep very busy while fasting especially if dealing with food and hungry relatives. However the intermittent fast protocols resolve the issue of social eating as you can have your cake and eat it in a manner of speaking :)

Day 3 of 7
11:58 PM

Hello David!

I've been IFing for the better half of this year, but of late its translated itself into a binge pattern. Therefore, this water fast I hope, is going to curb my cravings by a significant margin.

Also, weightloss has stalled for me - so this is my attempt at grabbing the issue by its horns and ultimately contending with it.

Today's been a particularly hard day - especially because my mother made some lovely persian chicken. <exhales> And she doesn't make it very often either. Lol. Sigh. Putting food in my mouth would be heavenly right about now! But if I cave now, the feeling of failure will be worse. Tomorrow is Day 4 and 3 days after that, is Day 7!
End of Week 1 for me!

I almost wanted to cave - but the fact that I've already fasted 2 days, means if I break now, I'd have to start from scratch all over again. And I want to go as far along as I can without having to repeatedly deal with 'restarting'.

Saying 'No' in your head is strangely very empowering.

So. I'm going to be calling it a night now.
Here I come Day 4!!!

Day 4 of 7

I can't sleep.

Interestingly, my allergies seem to have become more active - I'm getting these random itches or maybe I should call it heightened sensitivity?

I usually get itching like this due to an allergic reaction - and I take an antihistamine. There's no reason to worry because it's not anything severe. But I feel very fidgety and too alert to be able to fall asleep. Should I take my antihistamine during this fasting period? or tough it out? Hmmm - any suggestions?

Later today I'm going to try the 5 step Elimination cycle - at least the first 3 parts.

I'm browsing Raw Food recipes - which is interesting - since I'm having conflicting cravings. On the one spectrum - I want a big juicy burger :pinch: ....and on the other end....I want a fresh tasting salad.

I hope I start sleeping better as this fast progresses.

KittyKat,

Well done thus far! You're more than half way there. I can tell you that if you are not eating any solid food at all, you will lose weight. I lose around 17-20 lbs. during the first week of a fast. During the second week my weight comes off a bit more slowly, but from what I've read this is to be expected. I wish you continued success with your fast. :)

Day 4 of 7
10:27 pm

I just posted....but it didnt show. Hmmm.

Anywho - Thanks for the support Ockeghem!

I have to admit it's easier to just choose to not eat when you have a goal.

I hope I can keep going! I try not to think of the number of days left of my goal date - and just focus on the day itself.

Had a rough night last night - couldn't sleep 'til 4:30am last night - and woke up at 8:30am in the morning. The lack of sleep definitely made me feel more nauseous and sick.

I soldiered on to get dressed and go shopping with mom today - but 10 minutes into the drive to the mall - I started feeling sick and asked to go back home. My stomach was cramping and I felt like I was getting hot flushes. Turned out it was just gas - and I was fine once I passed it.

We continued with our plans, and I spent most of my morning and early afternoon strolling around and shopping.

Came back home and slept through the rest of the afternoon.

Just had a shower and will be going to bed earlier tonight - definitely wouldn't want to repeat today's ordeal tomorrow.

Looking forward to Dy 5.

This is Day 7.

My internet connection has been dodgy so i couldn't update about my 5th-6th day.
I broke my fast last night unfortunately.

Blacked out at one point.

My mother had picked up on my abstinence from food for the past 2 days. Making it more challenging to keep my fast - she started cooking 'for me' and started watching my intake. She also started lecturing.

So. In Conclusion - My weight loss ended at 103.6 lbs from a starting weight of 110 lbs. This is massive for me because I have never broken past 110 lbs. Not to be alarmed but I'm petite at 5'4.5 inches.
After eating its increased to 105 but it is stable.

It was an odd sensation eating - because my stomach needed to be stretched and I could feel a 'pulse' in my stomach. Must be all the blood rushing to the intestines to help digest the food after a while.

I ate an apple - followed by a meal of red rice and veges later. It was fine - except for how full I felt already.

I'm going to continue eating lightly today and then restart my fasting endeavour midday.

Mostly because I've noticed that the pores in my skin have shrunk! Nothing I ever did helped that! Not the potions, the face masks , the increased intake of vitamin e+c.

And there's an unmistakable glow. My hair also seems to have grown longer?
I've read somewhere that during fasting Growth Hormone is released by our body. So. Maybe that explains it.

The most challenging aspect honestly was the boredom! This week has honestly been the slowest week of my life. Which obviously tells me how I use food not for true hunger but for entertainment - I bake - I cook - I read recipes - I watch cooking shows - and suddenly doing that was not in my best interest - so yes! So much boredom!

Also, sleeping for me was hard without dinner. The first half of my night was always spent sleepless This is another factor that made my fasting a challenge for me.

My takeaway message is - honestly - we eat alot as a race!!! We constantly just keep eating! We really don't need to eat so much. And honestly. we really should be thinking of our fat depositions as nutrient reserves. It's amazing for me that I made it to Day 6 - although I know it's not exactly as far as i intended to go.

It's a massive success for me still, since I have never gone this far without food.

I want to thank everyone that's checked in on me and shared a few encouraging thoughts.

I will be attempting a longer fast again, soon.

Hi there, hope the fast went or is going well. Im starting my water fast today.so is my first day going to be tomorrow. I cried myself to sleep yesterday after a terrible binge but its time I fix this. The journey will be hard but well worth it.

I'm scared but will use through. My body is my temple so I have to treasure it x

Congratulations on your fast. That's truly wonderful. I know what it means to go farther than you have before, and that's a very good thing. :)

I agree. It's amazing to me how preoccupied humans are with food. I've written this before, so I won't repeat it here. But it really is astonishing to me.

You've inspired me to want to start my fast very much now. (It will begin this Monday, October 1st.)
