Hi Clara - I just finished my fast - I'll check in to support you though. Good luck!

Ockeghem - that's a fabulous idea - how about I join you this Monday too?
I was considering starting again on Sunday but Monday is great!

Food is definitely an obsession for our race - it seems a little ridiculous once you take pause and take in the scenery! And also - I'm still bowled by the fact that I 'survived' during these 6 days without any food. I knew this as scientific fact but to experience it was mind-altering.

KittyKat,

Sure, that's great. I hope we can all help to motivate one another during October.

LOL. During a sixteen-day fast I did a few months ago, my ten-year old daughter said this to me: "You would think you would be dead, but you're doing fine!"

I loved hearing that. :)

Areas of specialty and interests: Canon and Fugue; Greek and Latin language and literature; Marathoning and Ultramarathoning; Martial Arts (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Shotokan {Kissaki-Kai} Karate); Medieval and Renaissance music notation; Television series (All In the Family; Charmed, Dark Shadows, Lost, The Outer Limits, Roswell, Star Trek); Theology; Twelfth- and thirteenth-century conductus,...

Ockeghem,

Lol @ your daughter's rather astute observation.

Alright then - I'm on board!

Kittykat! Huge congrats on finishing 6 days. I loved what you wrote about fasting and boredom. I couldn't put it better way.
I'm a cooking freak and food lover, too.. just a lil bigger than you, tiny girl. It's like your toys were taken away from you, huh? Fast day toys - cleaning devices etc :evil: .

Hi KittyKat

Your post has reminded me of how good a longer fast can feel :) I had planned to do a several day fast sometime during the change of seasons, but sort of put it aside as I am alternate day fasting and busy! And maybe a little apprehensive with my ability to juggle it all. I felt inspired after reading this! Thanks!

Lol -Oh wow - Yes Shant! The boredom is really what did me in, more than anything.

I'm thinking of taking up my needlework when I start the october fast with everyone else - at least that doesn't involve any food or any extensive brain work!

I'll try and edge back into my studying too this time slowly but surely; it's going to be a challenge though because normally, I am used to snacking during my studying marathons.

I don't think I'll try the academic marathons early in the fast though - maybe later.

Has anyone ever just felt listless because of the fasting? I'm sure that's normal. That's an odd feeling to overcome.

And Thank you LadyEm - extended fasting is oddly very liberating. Challenging but liberating. It really isn't so hard after you make the decision to 'not eat'.
Also, I had noticed I did better on days that I stayed lightly active as opposed to giving into my survival notion of 'not moving and conserving' energy' ; those days I felt more nauseous and frail more than anything.

Also....I have to mention...for someone that has NEVER fasted past 2 days - OMG! I'm ALIVE! After 6 days of just water!!! How amazing are our bodies!!!! Food is SUCH a mind game! ( Exercise caution of course, not advised for those who are malnourished or sickly thin or with eating disorders).

:)

Needles, sewing machine - genius idea, Kittykat. What are you studying? I recently signed up for genetics and an introduction to programming. I had an urge to learn something completely new to me. Programming is such a magic. I'd have never said I would ever want to do this but it's such an unexplored area for me, that I - the virgin coder and the code are slowly becoming friends. :evil:

I highly agree with staying active during the water fast.

Well.

I just finished med school, so I like to keep myself hitting the books so I don't forget. Right now, I'm working full time but with flexible hours.

Genetics and programming - that's helluva cool! :P I was really into computing back in high school but I didn't have the patience for it :S

Starting my october fast from tomorrow - I'm trying to stuff myself with the vestigial remnants of any cravings bothering me...so that I feel content tomorrow.

But boyyyyy did I carb load for the last 4 days. :S

<unproud>

KittyKat I am curious were there any modules in med school on fasting?

Great minds discuss ideas;
Average minds discuss events;
Small minds discuss people.

Actually there wasn't.

There was a module on nutrition and nutritional deficiencies but fasting in itself was never focused on.
