Thinking of doing a water fast during the 5th week of of my insanity workout ( www.beachbody.com/product/fitness_programs/insanity.do )

I have been doing a water fast during the recovery day for the past couple of weeks and I seem to have more energy the following workout and it has increased my weight loss .

So as the 5th week meant to be a recovery week I was thinking of doing it for the whole week to help prepare me for the 2nd month of insanity. Would this improve my health or just make me lose some muscle and lower my metabolic rate?

I have been reading about fasting an interesting thing that I found was information that said through fasting that my digestive organs would improve and renew themselves which in turn actually means there I can digest better and actually improve my metabolism soon after I finished a fast.

The other thing I read think it was on this forum was that the effects last between 7-10 days after fast so you lose muscle the first three days and if your doing regular fasting which I started as I did 2 one day fasts so far you pick up where you left of.

Does this mean that as I did two one day water fasts six days apart I will only lose some muscle on the first day then the remaining six days I will lose fat?

Or do you have to get into the fasting state in a single fast before the effects carry on through the next week?

p.s. my recovery week starts in two more days so that's when I would start my week water fast which I think I probable will do but it would be nice if I had some advice before then.

Welcome dear cory!

Whether you lose fat or muscle depends on several factors, inter alia how active you are: Physical activity "signals" to your body that the muscles are not redundant and thus protect these. Also, using fat releases toxins thus it is important to make sure you do eliminate these, else the body might be "scared" to use fat. Please see the 5-step elimination cycle for recommended activities in this regard.

I typically advise that the first fast be in excess of 3 days to be very sure you break down fat. Subsequent fasts within a week from ending the previous would then to a large extent constitute a continuation instead of "starting from scratch". Thus these only need to be about 1 day in duration, say 30-40 hours. It is much more effective if you make sure you also eliminate the released toxins before resuming eating.

Thanks for the advice my last two water fasts started when my last meal say around 9-10pm and lasted until breakfast around 8am-9am so that's around 35 hours in the range you said and I was planning on continuing that after wards.

I will be doing exercise not as intensive as I usually do. I will also do a body fat/weight calculation before and after my fast and see how my body composition changes.

Hopefully I preserve most of my muscle.
