Hello, all! My boyfriend and I are currently on day 4 of a 7-day water fast. This is a first fast for me, but he has done some 3-day fasts in the past. The first two days were (compared to what I was expecting) a breeze. Hunger was minimal, and we got in about a half-hour of yoga and a cup of tea each day. Yesterday we were both completely drained of energy with aching in our arms and calves; however, I've read these can be normal symptoms, and both are virtually gone today. I still have a minimal amount of aching in my legs, but it's hardly noticeable, and my energy levels are vastly improved. I've had a bowel movement once a day for the past three days, but as of yesterday I've noticed that the movement is watery and yellow, and I haven't been able to find much information about this with regards to fasting.

I'm also concerned about symptoms my boyfriend has been having. Since we've started the fast he's had trouble getting to/staying asleep at night. He does have recurring issues with insomnia, but he'd been sleeping well before we started the fast. Also, towards the end of day 2 through today, he's been complaining of being thirsty but feeling too full to drink. He says it feels like he drank so much water on the first and second days that his stomach became bloated and has just stayed that way. I felt that was valid where day 3 was concerned, but he didn't drink very much water, and he hasn't had much water today either, and has been urinating regularly throughout each day, so I find it odd that the full feeling in his stomach is persisting. Is this something anyone has encountered or has more information on?

Thanks so much!

First of all, if you are consuming tea then you are not on a water fast. Tea is a stimulant. Muscle aches and sleeplessness are both common symptoms of fasting. I am not sure about your boyfriend's bloated stomach. It could just be gas. I would ditch the tea and see if this symptom disappears.

We only had one (small) cup of green tea a day, as we'd read that it could help with hunger symptoms and wouldn't significantly effect the fast; however, we discontinued the tea after the second day. I usually drink my tea with a little agave nectar, and I was surprised at how bitter it was without the little added sweetener--so much so that I didn't feel it was worth it to consume it during the fast.

It is quite common to have sleep issues I am sure the caffeine doesn't help either, but it would be best if you eliminated it and just drank water like Esmee said.

After a few more fasts it will get easier when you first start it's always more difficult.
