Good job, Selfcontrol. I like your screen name. It has a positive message. My goal is to continuously intermittent fast every week this year. I'm doing Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Today I am fasting with my sister but I will probably break the fast tomorrow because I have a trail run planned for Sunday at 1pm. It's a 2 hour run so I will probably need some carbs.

I'm on a water fast myself. Today is actually day 4 for me so I'm excited about that. The longest I've done was a five day fast which was last year, but I plan to go for longer this time. My plan is to fast for 21 to 30 days or until hunger returns.Good luck with your fast!

I'm glad we are fasting today and at least I know you are fasting today with me. I wish us all well on this fast...self control, self be controlled! :woohoo:

Hello everyone! today is day 2 for me. I'm doing good today and glad to be fasting! How are you doing?

yesterday I solved my hunger by drinking water and just pushing past the hunger. I went to the movies with my husband last night and did not eat any of his popcorn; I'm so thankful that I was able to have self control and knowing that I was fasting with you all!!

I feel good not letting my belly rule me or be my god...I'm really sick of being ruled by my belly!

I hope you all have a great day with lot's positive progress on your fasting!

"Or let my belly be my God" - nice quip. I can definitely relate to that. Good on you for not picking at your husband's popcorn as well - it's such a moorish food, and it smells so good that it must've taken some serious self control (as your username would imply!). Is your husband supporting you on your fast? It's always handy to have someone to fall back on if you feel your motivation slipping.

Push through. I'm entering day 5 in a few hours, and day 4 was so much easier than the first three. You'll find that hunger subsiding significantly. Keep up the water. If you're finding it painfully difficult, curl up in the foetal position on the couch and chuck on some re-runs of the West Wing (or whatever takes your fancy). It will subside, promise.

This forum topic is becoming a great source of support. It's so nice to see everyone encouraging each other. I've been off my computer but I have been reading every post from my email box. I wanted to join in the conversation. I'm between fasts today, but I'm going to fast tomorrow.

Here are some tricks I have found to avoid eating while fasting:
Avoid food. Let your family cook for themselves. Avoid going into the kitchen if it is a trigger. Don't read cookbooks or watch a lot of tv that has commercials because they are designed to make you crave food. If you are at work, move the candy bowls and ask people not to bring in food or offer you food. I usually tell people I am "in detox" or that I am avoiding refined foods or sugar or whatever excuse I can.

Keep busy. When you are bored, you are going to want to eat. Don't let yourself get bored. Have tasks to do that will take your mind and your hands. Set this as a time to declutter. Even when you are fasting, you should have the strength to declutter. Think of it as a time to cleanse your body and your home of excess crap. Think of the new year as a time to start over and start fresh.

Think of cravings as coming in waves. They start mild, build in intensity and then fade away. Wait it out. There will be plenty of time to eat food. There will always be another time to enjoy whatever it is you are craving. Keep reminding yourself of that.

Tell yourself that it's not that delicious. Food never tastes as good as you think it is going to. You only think it is going to. Remind yourself of how often food has disappointed you. You're not really missing much.

Hope some of that helps.

@Selfcontrol44
I am so impressed that you avoided the movie popcorn. That really does take self control, especially when you are bombarded with the scents and by the tradition of eating while watching a movie. I am curious as to your husband's reaction to your fast. I usually don't tell my husband when I am fasting as he is not supportive. He won't try to get me to eat food, but he doesn't agree with it. (Which is sad, because he is on pain meds for an inflamed sciatic nerve, even though I recommended he fast for just a few days instead)

@AylaPhoenix Congrats on getting through day 4. Thanks for all the encouragement. I will join you again fasting on Monday. Today I'll be running a couple hours on hilly terrain and I'm not confident that I could do that fasting. But reading your posts makes me wish I had continued a longer fast rather than intermittent. But my body really only needs the intermittent fasting right now.

Hi Ayla,

Thanks for the encouragement. Yes, he is somewhat supportive. I just talk to him and tell him not to take me to restaurants for the next few weeks.

Good for you for being on day 5, that is awesome! Keep up the great work and you push thru as well.

I'm on the morning of day 3 and I feel good fasting. I do need to keep up with the water. I did have some temptation yesterday but I resisted. I won't say what tempted me because I don't want to tempt anyone. Happy fasting to everyone!

@ Lisa, that is such great advice! Enjoy your day off and I look forward to you joining us again tomorrow!

Sorry to hear your hubby is not more supportive; It sounds like a fast could help him.

I tell my husband everything, we are celebrating 18 years of marriage today but I told him I do not want to go out to diner.

:cheer:

I have fallen off the wagon plenty of times. But then you look back and think, well I made it through how many days? That's great and better than I have done before. I like the intermittent fasting because you do get breaks from fasting. The bad thing is that you go through day 1 over and over. I'm hoping it gets easier. Today is an eating day and I'm going to try to eat only whole foods and avoid anything refined. Hopefully my day 1 tomorrow will go smoothly. I'm fasting from this evening until Thursday evening. I am NOT going to binge today. I will eat freely, but only healthy, nourishing foods.
