Hello all! Today is starting day 4 of my seven day fast. I always do long term fasts when hubby is away so I don't get tempted. I am new to the board but have been a lurker for quite a long time. I started fasting about 4 years ago when I was really sick from my ulcerative colitis. Unfortunately after a 35 day fast (started as juice but the fiber still hurt so I went to water which still hurt), I still had to go on the "big guns" b/c I just didn't want to lose my colon. I've had some other ups and downs, but I really do love fasting. I usually feel super after the initial detox stops. I should add that I def have an eating disorder and always say I'm on the "see food" diet. If I see it, I eat it, all of it.
I started getting sick, depressed, anxiety, headaches every day, etc, etc, etc to the point where I was trying to figure out how to leave my family. Gave up gluten almost 6m ago and every last one of those constant problems went away. And since then when I fast I have almost no symptoms. Before giving up gluten I would go through heck the first day or three, now I don't, not even a headache. We went on vacation and I eventually did eat gluten in Dec...guess what. Headache on my one day fast again. Stopped eating gluten, no headache on my next one day fast.

So my question is...other them feeling like I want to crawl out of my body, like I have restless leg syndrome or something...I have no other detox. The second day I had a lot of mucus, but that's about it. No acne (which is usually bad, but getting better), no real headaches, not super irritable. I eat pretty clean, cokes only on special occasions, very little processed foods...but don't you guys who eat super well and do detoxes all the time still have symptoms? I used to and there's NO WAY I'm that clean. I still eat a fair amount of bad stuff. I do 7-9 day fasts when I can so maybe 4 over the last 4 years (been making and nursing babies), 3 day fasts maybe every 6m, and one day fasts maybe once a month (just do it depending on how I feel and how much junk I've been eating). I haven't changed much about how I fast over the years. I do water, period, no cheating. I do chew on the sides of my fingers (I KNOW, but I can't stop...been trying for 25 years), but I always did that. I always have sinus drainage. The only thing I changed was the gluten. I am convinced gluten is the devil, but could it make THAT big of a difference?
Makes fasting harder b/c I don't feel it doing as much. Except for the restlessness. And the weightloss which I really enjoy. :P

Thanks for any insight you might have!!
P.S. I have 4 kids under 9 so I have a fairly active fast taking care of them.

Welcome, Khaavi. Glad to have you here. You sound like you have a lot that you could share with your fasting experience. Especially with such a busy household and while keeping it a secret from your spouse.

I'm on day 9 of a water fast and aside from a headache the first day, I didn't have any detox symptoms. Only a slight runny nose occasionally, no big deal. I attribute that to all the fasts I've been doing that my body is relatively "clean" and doesn't need to detox. That was very interesting about your experience with eliminating gluten. For myself, I find that refined flour and sugar before a fast guarantees a nasty headach while fasting. I also quit drinking coffee (except for an occasional Decaf Soy Latte at starbucks as a treat) for the express purpose so that I could fast without having the first three days be this horrible headache.

I would say, just enjoy your detox symptom free fast and know that you have accomplished much with your body with all your fasting.

Thanks for your response! Good to know you don't have much either. I was starting to wonder if my body wasn't responding as well or something. I don't hide it from my hubby, I just do it while he's out of town b/c it's just too much temptation when he's here. I can only get through one day fasts when he's home. He'll cook for everyone, and he knows what I'm doing, but it's just too much of a pain. He usually has 2 good week long trips a year at least.
It was funny b/c I started after dinner Friday night and he didn't leave till Sunday. When I was dropping him off he said "you're really not going to eat the whole time I'm gone?? Isn't that really bad for you?" It was so innocent, but he knows I've done it before, so I don't think he's too worried. There's always the worry for me while I'm driving the kids, etc. My blood pressure is normally like 90/60, so it starts out low.

I gave up sodas a long time ago. I found I either drink all sodas or all water and I can not switch between the two. So I reserve those for movies or special occasions, and then it's only root beer b/c if I'm going to drink it, it's gonna be my favorite. :)
I also find that if I have one or two it doesn't bother me. Any more and I have the 3 day addiction break and it's killer.

Just went to the store to get lunch stuff for the kids. I avoided getting the easy pizza for them tonight so I didn't have to cook much and it was something I would NOT be tempted by (gross). BUT fruit was on sale. OH MY!!! I think I drooled on myself. I'm frustrated b/c that's partly why I was fasting now (winter) before all the fruit came out and I could make my super huge fruit salad that I've been dying for. Missed that mark I guess!

Have to go put it away now. I will have self control, I will have self control, I will have self control!!!

I'm also having an acid reflux type feeling. Is this normal? I don't usually have this, fasting or not. Kinda feeling like I should drink some apple cider vinegar, but then I figure that would break my fast. :\

I would just drink water whenever I felt the acid reflux feeling. Vinegar is an acid so I don't think that would help. Dr Batmanghelidg used to treat peptic ulcer patients with water only and usually 1 or 2 glasses of water would take away their pain in 30 min. Sometimes one more glass after 30 min was needed.

How are you doing on your fast? I hope it is going well!

:cheer: It's going fabulous. I'm still feeling lazy, but only b/c I know I work myself to death and never sit down, so I'm forcing myself to take it easy. My energy has definitely returned! Went to zumba last night (end of day 4) with the intention of taking it easy, but kept up full strength with the hardest teacher there for the whole hour. She's even told me I work harder than her (not joking) so I know I'm up there. I felt great and when we were cooling down and I stood up too fast, I figured it was all over and I'd pass out (since I've had a lot of dizziness getting up this week)...I was perfectly fine! I guess all the blood flowing. It felt fabulous! Did some slow stuff this morning, and zumba again tomorrow. Then I'm off till Monday and I'll have to break my fast by then.
Still having trouble sleeping. That's a pain.

I don't think you need as much sleep while fasting. Your body's energy is not all tied up in digesting food so it doesn't need as much rest. I've been waking before the sun every day.
