Hi,

I have been diagnosed with Schizophrenia by multiple psychiatrists. A lot of the time, I basically feel brain-dead, which is probably part of the cognitive and/or negative symptoms of the disorder. Can fasting cure Schizophrenia? Can it improve overall mental abilities? Thank you.

Dear Link, the disorders called Schizophrenia covers a spectrum of intensity and is rather heterogenous. It is generally accepted to be "in the genes" and as such can not be "cured". Often most of "brain-dead" feelings come from the medication but without medication one can often not function in our society at all.

In some of our indigenous African cultures, schizophrenia is often a huge advantage in that people with one of these conditions is considered to have magical powers which qualifies them to be a "sangoma".

There have been cases where schizophrenia was caused by food allergies. An elimination diet (Which includes a period of fasting before every food challenge test) may then indeed be very useful to help identify the culprit(s). You should read some fo dr Allan Cott's work such as

www.amazon.com/Fasting-The-Ultimate-Diet...n-Cott/dp/0803893825

in which he does explain how fasting and orthomolecular medicine helped in conditions such as yours.

In his book "Fasting For Health" Prof. Yurii Sergeevich Nikolaev(a fast doctor in former USSR) gives healing of Schizophrenia as an example of a complete cure, achieved by water fasting! Prof. Nikolaev has treated several cases of Schizophrenia and he explains it there - if the book has been translated in English, you should be able to find the answers ...

It will be my pleasure, Andre! I had Nikolaev's book, translated in Bulgarian, for 25 years. Many times I've given it to friends to read it and about 10 years ago, unfortunately, I lost the track of it. The book was written in Russian, I know it was translated in Bulgarian, I have no idea if it has an English translation. I am still looking for a copy in Bulgarian or in English of this book myself. All I can find now is this: rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2025739
and this: ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9D%D0%B8%D0%BA...B5%D0%B2%D0%B8%D1%87 ,
and this: www.koob.ru/nikolaev_u/

I have forgotten the details, but I remember that Schizophrenia was one of the examples, given by Nikolaev, for complete cure - this was a history of a person, who had lost his job(got social retirement) and family(was divorced) due to the disease, who got a new job and family after (I guess two, or three) years of treatment in one(he had three) of Nikolaev's fasting clinics. From the third link you can get a pgf copy of the book in russian. Best regards, doctor.

Thank you so much dear Dedov. I am looking forward to seeing this and do hope you find an English translation... unlikely, I guess, to find and Afrikaans one!

Please look into a ketogenic diet and Schizophrenia. I understand there are many great results from this way of eating. Of course, fasting will get you ketogenic quickly (or just start the diet) and then the diet to maintain.

Indeed dear Elizabeth. Ketones stabilize the electrical activity on cellular membranes... which is why it has been used with great success in treating resistant epilepsy. Would make sense to help in unstable membranes in the brain from other conditions such as schizophrenia also.
