Hi,

I have been diagnosed by my psychiatrist with schizophrenia, and I am wondering if there are any types of fasts or diets (e.g. raw food diet, water-only fast, juice fast, etc.) that can cure this disease.

For those of you not aware of this disease, it is a psychological illness that affects about 1% of the population. It is characterized by thoughts of paranoia, and in general it is not a pleasant thing to have at all. The medication that my psychiatrist has me on also has side effects--the main one being tardive dyskinesia, which is characterized by random, meaningless, facial movements. For example, random puckering of the lips, opening of the mouth, scrunching up the nose, etc. I desperately want to cure myself, and I know that there are also additional benefits to fasting/eating healthy.

The effect of fasting on this disease is not well studied and rather unpredictable. Theoretically, becasue ketones can pass through the blood-brain barrier quite easily, your brain is supplied with MORE energy when you are fasting.. once fully catabolic of course.

The specific characteristics of your condition will determine whether you will improve when the brain gets more energy, or whether this higher level of energy will make the symptoms worse.

But since you can abort a fast at very short notice (fruit juice will elevate the blood sugar quicly and stop ketosis), it is likely safe to try. I would however recommend this is initially done under supervision in a fasting clinic where at the very least you can be observed in case anything does go haywire..
