Dear Doc.

I've read your comment about acute stress on muscles creating a survival mode vs maintenance. I am initiating the 5 step active program today and am wondering what exercise, if any, you recommend that will support the fast but minimize muscle attrition? I'm considering swimming at an easy pace prior to the 5 step. Could weight training be ok as long as I didn't train to soreness?

Thanks,
Bob

There's a lot of misconceptions about exercise during a fast dear Bob.. indeed you are physically capable of more, as your body needs not waste energy nor immunity on the digestive process.

The kind of exercise is immaterial. It serves mainly to generate blood flow for the tonic phase to move it to the skin. And, any muscle that is used during a fast is protected from breakdown as it "signals" its own usefulness. Thus indeed weight training may be ideal, as is swimming... as is jogging or gardening or whatever you feel up to.
