Fasting post hair transplant surgery

Doctor -

As the title implies, I had a hair transplant 8 days ago. As I'm sure you're aware it is a rather minimal risk outpatient surgery. My question is not geared towards the safety of fasting now, but if it will affect the growth of the hair grafts that were transplanted.

Will the hairs still receive the proper nutrition that they need?

Thank You,

Bradley

I would advise against fasting so soon after a hair transplant since fasting causes a "centralization of circulation", thus depriving the scalp of blood flow. This could impede the "taking" of the hair transplant. Of course if you could improve the blood flow for example by scalp massage and/or heat-and-cold-treatment of the scalp that should negate this effect, but generally massage is also not very safe so soon after a transplant.

Thank you for the quick response. My general motivation for fasting is 1. improved health and 2. weight loss ( I need to lose about 22kgs).

How long do you recommend I wait before doing a fast of 5-10 days?

Also, since weight loss is a goal of mine, would one, or all, of these options be ok:

1) Intermittent Fasting: either eating just one meal daily within a set time.

2) Or possibly eating one day and then the next day fasting. Is this safe considering the transplant?

3) Just eating very low calories each day. By low I mean between 500-750.

Thank You,

Bradley

Dear Bradley given the high cost of a hair transplant and also the fact that there is probably a period where the new hair has to 'settle' itself, I would highly recommend avoiding any major deviation from your current eating habits other than eating slightly less at meals until you and your surgeon are satisfied that the new hair has been given sufficient time to harmonize.

You can't go wrong if you eat a third less at meals :)

But also this question is addressed to The Fast Doctor so I am certainly chipping in out of turn.

Thank you so much David for this very appropriate piece of advice while I was otherwise occupied. I fully agree. There are just too many unknowns at this stage: Each individual has his or her own individual toxins which could have a detrimental effect on the newly transplanted hair in Bradley's case. Heat and cold treatment might still be good (to improve the circulation) but even massage should wait a few weeks as the transplants first have to "set down roots".

Thank you to both of you for the quick responses.

My HT doctor told me that the hairs should be well rooted after 10 days, but I think I will feel more comfortable following a low calorie diet for the first month, and then considering a fast after a month's time has passed.

For now I'll stick to a very low calorie diet, which still gets the essential nutrients required. I do not believe this will cause the grafts not to grow.

Well, I am 3.5 weeks out from surgery now. After 10 days the transplanted hair is securely in place, and can only be removed surgically. I started a water fast today, and I am going to try the massaging method. I am not sure if there is a specific plan I should follow for this. Do you have recommendations for length and frequency?

Thank You.
