I just want to mention that Dr. John Daugirdas (a nephrologist, kidney specialist) who wrote the book The QUD Diet: Eating Well Every Other Day recommends one day on--one day off fasting for weight loss. He says that if you keep your fasting period to one day (36 hours) that your metabolism does not slow down (but it will on fasts of longer duration), so even though you may not get as deeply into ketosis on a one day fast you still end up buring body fat over time because you use the glucogen reserves on your fast day (and then dip into body fat reserves towards the end) and then on your eating day your body has to make more glycogen to fill up your reserves before making more fat to store. Of course, you would have to experiment to see how it works for you personally.

answered by Cory: I know long fasts temporary decrease your metabolic rate, I just noticed when I did two 48 hour fasts a day apart comparing to a four day fast I noticed that my fat lose was greater on the latter. Also Milena mentioned before that Dr. Filonov recommended to do 7 day dry fast/re-feed then repeat for maximum fat lose.

As long as ease of the dry fast to allow your metabolic rate to speed up again before fast again it should have normalized so instead of having to keep burning though your glycogen reserves before it burning fat hence each day you may have a few hours compared to the other approach where overall you will probable burn a lot of fat. Say if you do a week on week off you will be in fat burning mode from say 24 hours in so in total 144 hours in the two weeks including re-feed, while in 36hour on off your probable burning fat in only 12 hours totaling 56 hours in two week over 250% decrease in the same time period. On a side note I noticed I reach a higher level of ketosis after a couple of days compared to in the first 36 hours so you probable burning more fat from day 3 onwards than in the 12 hours in the 36 hour on off fast.

I am sure both ideas will result in fat lose but doing longer fasts will generally give better results as long as your careful in the re-feed afterwards.

David,

What Cory is said is absolutely true. Of course you will burn through more fat on a long dry fast a lot faster then on intermittent. We don't need to ask Dr. Filonov about that. He did tell me already that the fastest way to lose fat is doing 7 days on 7 days off. But the number of people willing to do that is limited. So we need to develop a system that will work for everyone. You can however post a question for him and I will ask.

By the way let's move this discussion between us to the Fat Loss on Dry Fast.. since it does not really need to be here. I only want to have specific questions to Dr. Filonov here...:)

I do plan to do this currently on the 5th day what I believe I will finish the whole week this time, last week I did 5 days dry with 4 days re-feed.

Just because most people cannot do it doesn't mean there cannot work up to it if there feel like it dry fasts get easier the more you do.

Yes, it definately gets easier physically. The psychological cravings are still there, but not to the same extent. I kind of miss being able to just jump in, do a couple of long dry fasts and get over it, but since I've committent to my 12-week experiment with intermittent fasting, I am going to stick with it till September 7th. After that, whatever I will have left fat% wise at that point, I will take care of with a long dry fast.
