Starting IF and IF Journal - love your support and advice!

Hi all!

I've been a semi-frequent water faster since about September last year, and have since completed a 21 day fast, two 19 day fasts and several 14 and fewer day fasts. I've sort of come to the realisation that I want to hold on to the feelings I have when I'm fasting way more often, and figured that IF would be the perfect way to include that in my life long-term.

Because I often have loads of trouble starting fasts, I wanted to journal about my experience here. I'm planning to start with 40/8 hours fasting to eating, and might transition eventually to one day on, one day off. We'll see how it pans out.

Goals:
1) Eat mindfully, respectfully and cleanly. I'd like to value what and how much food I'm putting into my body, and I believe that water fasting frequently will help me with this.
2) Lose a little weight - I feel bloated, and ick, and ready to cleanse.
3) Be more aware of how emotions dictate what I eat. Instead of simply feeling rubbish after a long day at work, for example, and eating my way through the fridge, this regime sort of opens up a safe space to explore how I'm feeling, and seek other ways to comfort myself that doesn't involve chocolate and pasta.

If anyone's reading along, please feel free to write a little message or drop in a smiley. Just knowing other people are out there who share the same ideals and support me in this venture is unbelievably motivating. Also, if you're another IF any tips would be massively appreciated.

I finished my last meal about an hour ago, so my first day of fasting starts tomorrow. Post at the end of the day!

These points are very meaningful to me too. Its easy to be philosophical when one has a full stomach. So some tips which may help the process: Do a work out such as rebounding prior to eating as one will feel less inclined to indulge. And prepare the eating environment by making it pretty and artful. By turning it into a special occasion, gradually a connection is made between eating and a special event. Then one can shift away from previous purely functional eating patterns. Functional meaning the message one gives to the body is that eating is not that important so it can be done in conjunction with another activity such as watching TV or being on the phone/txting etc.

I would also like to try fasting every second day.

Do keep us posted please. :)

Thanks David! I've heard that making your eating space a luxurious one you're more likely to value the experience. When I water fast for a good length I drink from a gorgeous little goblet I own to reaffirm the wealth of the experience.

I also really like the suggestion of the workout pre-eating. This sounds like it'd be a perfect way to counter-act the desire to overindulge. I'll definitely put this into practice.

So, avowing aside, today was my first day of IF-ing, and I am still fasting. I'll continue through to about 6 o clock tomorrow evening before eating. At this point I'm planning to steam some broccoli, grill some marinated tofu and I'll probably add a boiled egg to maximise protein. So far no stomach grumbles today, well, not until I just wrote that sentence (course), but I'm planning to do a little yoga now before receiving a call from overseas, which should carry me home until bedtime.

How's your fasting going, David?

How's your fasting going, David?

Well funny that you should mention that as it has honestly been an uphill struggle as I am an emotional eater and it really doesn't help to have a partner who who makes the most delicious and enticing culinary delights on non fasting days, but on fasting days she doubles her efforts. So you can see the temptation is ever present. But have as of yesterday decided to double my efforts and give IFing every second day a go. Today is a non indulging day. It is probably the hardest type of IFing as it is usually the first day which requires the most will power. However it is the best type of fasting practice to increase will power. And once mastered then the will should be stalwart enough to manage longer fasts too. In fact I think that IFing is the only durable and sensible type of fasting as from my experience most people who commit to longer fasts and very long fasts go back to their old eating routines afterwards and not to mention that very few actually transition correctly which negates many of the good benefits derived from a short or long fast. So wish me luck and I wish you oodles of will power too :)

@David: That sucks - constantly being surrounded by delicious food. My roommates seem to especially enjoy buying / eating chocolate, ice cream, fast food when I'm fasting. And I think most people have probably given in, at some point in their fasting careers - whether that be on an intermittent fasting day or a more enduring fast. Stick with it (and I'm saying this as much for you as for me), because it's so much easier knowing there are others out there who share sameself values when it comes to this - in my case it's the family who are extremely edgy about the F word.

So I've come to the end of the first 'cycle', sort of. I've been fasting all day, and it's now ten to ten at night, and I'm not sure whether I'll just continue on to tomorrow evening and have just added an extra day (for fun, I think?) or eat something now. I'm definitely not retaining as much water as I was a couple of days ago, and I'm hoping some of the loss is actually substance and not just faux-loss. Sidenote - I won't be weighing myself throughout this experiment, I'm more a 'feel how the jeans are fitting' type of gal.

Right now, the house is empty and I'm a little worried that once I start eating, I won't stop. So maybe I'll just bath, book 'n' bed. Whatever happens, expect more posts.

Once you have reached bedtime in the fasting state, you can get several hours "bonus" fasting metabolism by only breaking it the next morning..

In time being exposed makes your stronger if you can resist it. It's like an athlete getting fit and thus less tired during exercise.

That is precisely why I think IF with a every second day frequency is an optimal way to train and cleanse.

Sorry for the silence! I had a downturn the past couple of days, and my first instinct was to do what I usually do, revert into poor eating habits, fairly depressed about another false-start - but I'm fighting against this instinct this time.

In the end I waited until Wednesday to eat - and, well, I won't get into details suffice to say it was an unmitigated disaster. This sort of um, barrel-rolled into Thursday. But, I'm picking up the ball again today, be forgiving of myself, and treat myself respectfully. So Dave - you're not the only one who falls off the band-wagon. Coming back to this space is like a cozy little corner of the internet for me, with interesting conversation and like-minded people. I'm making a commitment to continue writing about IF.

I'm wondering if I shouldn't start posting weight, as both motivation as well as a progress chart. We will see. David - found some momentum yet?

Sometimes a "disaster" wakes up some hidden abilities in your body and/or your mind, you otherwise would not have been able to use.. so try to see the positive in everything. For example having junk food upon entering a fast primes your body into processing and eliminating that same junk during a fast.

The important thing is that you start again. A new start is a wonderful phenomenon. And with weekly fasting you get 52 wonderful things every year!

Thanks am really happy with my IF 010 today is day 5 a fast day. The beauty of fasting every second day is that when the chips our down you can tell yourself that food will be on your plate again tomorrow. And luckily for me my subconscious seems to buy that at least for now. I am keeping a blog on the blog page. Perhaps you would like to join me on the 010 ?

IF in my opinion is eat one day and fast one day.. thus eat for example on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday.. that would give you about 30 hours of fasting between meals on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday.. since metabolically fasting only starts about 24 hrs after the last meal, you should utilize the night to add onto the fasting metabolism. Less than 30 hours is not really effective.

Please also do at least one 5-step elimination cycle of activities before breaking the fast.

Virelai I think that is the Eat Stop Eat approach whereas the 010 which a friend just reminded me is also known as the King David Fast (very fitting for me :) )Is a 16/36 fast. 16 hour eating window and a 36 hour fasting window. 6am to 10 pm eating. And 10 pm to 6am the following day is the 36 hour fasting period. This is perhaps not long enough to enter full ketosis, but over time it would have a cumulative effect and also an excellent IF fast routine for increasing will power. Feel free to join me.
