Hi all! I am new to the group and new to IF. I have tried to find as much info off the internet as i could and have bought an ebook... But i just can't seem to find some specific answers to questions i have.

First of all, i am 25 and a registered nurse. That being said, i have horrible eating habits. I love fast food and soda... And junk food. But my love for these evil things have brought me to this point.. 70 pounds overweight and completely miserable with myself. I've tried everything... Most recently atkins. I've lost weight with atkins but always end up gaining it back. I need a change for myself! So when i found out about IF i was so excited thinking I've found something i can be successful with. But i just need the right ktools to get back to where i need to be... I have been doing 18 hour fasts with 6 hour eating periods. So here are my questions. ..

1. What should i be eating when i am eating? Low carb?
2. Should i fast everyday?
3. What can i do to maximize my weight loss efforts?
4. What about exercising during fasting?

I really appreciate anyone who replies. I was so happy to find this forum :) i will take all the info and tips i can get! Thank y'all!

Hiya! I'll share my psychological tricks in hopes they might work for you. You sound just like me before I lost my caffeine & fizzy drink habit and junk food habit.

1. I personally try to shove as many fresh veges and to a lesser extent fresh fruit as I can afford into my body. However, it's expensive!! That makes less room for anything else and acts as a natural balancing mechanism for your diet. It tricks your brain into being full and reducing hunger.

2. I would review the Fast doctor's wealth of information in this forum and just spend a week reading what's already been posted. He recommends making fasts a regular part of your life as opposed to a singular experience that is doomed to fail.

3. When I fast, I eat ZERO - only WATER. Tasting anything, even lemon water, will make you have cravings. I drink lots of water because I've had kidney stones in the past. (BTW, mega doses of Vitamin C have been proven to cause kidney stones.)

4. Some here do this. They can provide much more insight. I personally don't have the energy for it unless it's a normal activity such as cutting the grass. On this regard, I would do whatever enables your ability to focus - focus - on your fasting and make it as easy as possible.

I failed at fasting for less than 24 hours. It did me no good. It's still eating once a day and then I eat a LOT because I'm hungry. I finally found weight loss success by fasting for 24-60 hours each time. I can literally see my body shrink over time and it's not water because I drink quite a bit during fasting. I'm all or nothing. Once I taste food, I'm done for which is why I remain strictly water fast as opposed to "dieting."

I remain mentally active during fasts and start them on my days off when I am not under stress. Find any activity you enjoy from surfing the net, reading, or outdoor activities. I can carry over a fast into my work days much more easily than I can begin one during work days.

During a fast, I remain FOCUSED by remembering by very favourite food in the entire world - pizza from my favourite independent place - and realise I can have as much as I want after I've properly broken the fast.

I got rid of the fast food habit by telling myself that if I was going to put calories into my body, they were going to be GOOD TASTING HIGH QUALITY JUNK (LOLOL) not junk from a mega corporation chains made by someone who might spit in my food and worse. I tell myself all sorts of horrible things about fast food chain food (MUCH OF IT TRUE..just search the web) so I don't succumb to the cravings. Instead I go to my favourite INDEPENDENT pizza or mexican or burger restaurant and I find I am satisfied with eating MUCH LESS of it because it is higher quality and more flavourful food than the corporate slop house chains. By the time you eat enough chain slop to get full or satisfied (chemicals added to make you crave it), you've spent as much as at a higher quality independent restaurant.
I despise fast food now. I dislike people making my food who don't care, who don't wash their hands, who are rude, who use poor sanitation when preparing food, who refuse to say thank you or acknowledge me with respect, and who sometimes even openly show me their personal biases in their attitude, and who hire "managers" that couldn't care less as well. Why would I want to subject myself to this treatment? (Can you tell I despise everything about fast food?) I despise what they are doing to our bodies and our health. Fast food is the scourge of the food world.

Make yourself think ANYthing if it will help you avoid eating fast food. There is no bloody reason to feel guilty for it. It's your body and this sort of psychology is useful to keep going when you pass these places in your travels. Read how many times chains have got caught using pink slime, horsemeat and even Roo meat. Read the stories of Ecoli deaths of children.. Read the stories of workers contaminating food intentionally. It's all on the web. You won't go back :)

So when I want pizza I go to my favourite independent shop where 2 pieces fills me up when it would take an entire pizza from the chains because of the addicting chemicals they use.

Another easy way to avoid fast food is to avoid extreme hunger when out and about or on the way to work by EATING AT HOME OR MAKING YOUR LUNCH FOR WORK AT HOME.

Eventually, your goal will be to do without unhealthy food completely.

COOK!! If you have a need for unhealthy food, cook it yourself. You'll eat less, be more satisfied and it's still going to be healthier because you bought fresher ingredients and prepared it with your own clean hands in your own clean kitchen.

Eventually, you will lose your cravings and begin to eat healthier by default.

I broke the caffeine habit and it changed my LIFE! I did it by adding the number of fizzy drinks I drank per day and multiplying by 150 cals and then by 365 days and realised how many wasted calories I was consuming.
First, I switched to non caffeine fizzy drinks like cream soda, root beer, orange or ginger ale. Once the caffeine habit was gone, I broke myself from fizzy drinks completely. I now realise how much plain water is wonderful! (DO NOT DRINK DIET SODAS! THEY ARE COMPLETE POISON and the people who make them are criminals, just as are the ones who make HFCS)

If I'm going to consume a sweet, it's going to be real cane sugar if at all possible to avoid the GMOs in beet sugar and to avoid the poison and GMOs in HFCS.

SO just get MAD. Do what I did - look in the mirror - and say you aren't going to take it anymore. The fat on our bodies, the mean slop workers, and the corporate distributors of poison. Say you're mad as ........and you aren't going to take it anymore! LOLOL (That was a brilliant movie LOL)

Just read read read the wealth of information here and the posts from the Fast Doctor. He's just brilliant.

It's OUR LIFE and OUR BODY! It belongs to us! Just take control and remove the control from the ones who would do us harm in the name of PROFIT.

/rant over

(No I'm not politically correct, I don't apologise for it, and sorry for the long post)

Hi BDM,
Maybe this will help since you say you are new to this. I followed an intermittent fasting plan called, 'Fast 5 diet and lifestyle'. The e-book is free on the website. You fast for 19 hrs. and eat for 5. My food window is 5pm to 10pm. You can use any 5 hour stretch. The 19 hours includes sleeping. You eat 'til you are full no grazing. you don't have to give up anything eat whatever you like. Get the e-book or, 10 bucks at Barnes and Noble. It works I lost 40 lbs. and that was 5 yrs ago. I think there is also a group at Sparkpeople. Good Luck
