I am wondering if adding lemon juice to your water on a 21 day water fast will prevent any benefits from fasting, detox or ketosis?

Any negative or positive effects on day 1 all water fast

The Doctor would know. I only know having any sort of taste would trigger a binge and a broken fast. Just so much easier when I have only water.

I have addressed this question several times in these forums but by way of repetition:

When any TASTE pass your taste buds/tongue, the brain (Hypothalamus) gets the "message" that you have eaten. Thus it instructs the intestine to abort its holiday and come back to work. It instructs the fat cells to hang on to the reserves as there's food on the way.

Taste also burdens your taste buds so that they don't fully rest and therefore do not become more sensitive as they usually do when you fast.

It is not a big issue, as you will still go catabolic due to the real absence of alternative nutrition and if a bit of lemon helps you not reverting to "normal" eating, that's the better option. But for a purist, any taste is a diet and not a fast.

I find it works for me to have a warm lemonade (with stevia and ginger root) on a water fast if I can't face more plain water. I sometimes use peppermint flavored water as well. Both of those, or even ginger tea, work better for me than succumbing to the temptation to eat/drink when I prefer to avoid eating. They don't seem to make me hungry and the long-term benefits of regular fasting, however I can get it to work, are more important to me (than only doing water fasting and giving up when it feels too hard). :D

CherryBomb,

Yeah, I drink black coffee and an occasional herbal tea (along with water) during any of my 'no food' fasts. (I call them that because drinking juices, or anything else with calories in it, takes you out of the realm of pure water fasting.)

Areas of specialty and interests: Canon and Fugue; Greek and Latin language and literature; Marathoning and Ultramarathoning; Martial Arts (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Shotokan {Kissaki-Kai} Karate); Medieval and Renaissance music notation; Television series (All In the Family; Charmed, Dark Shadows, Lost, The Outer Limits, Roswell, Star Trek); Theology; Twelfth- and thirteenth-century conductus,...

Thanks for sharing that. Love the way you put it: "no food" fasts. I do a good bit of having a drink instead of eating a meal (even when not on a "no food" fast). My body seems to love it (but I can't do caffeinated coffee, matcha/green tea or yerba mate are ok). :D

You could also try pure carbonated water. It does suppress appetite quite effectively and carries no calories. Also it does not have a taste that is associated with food, so your tastebuds remain on holiday, to come back to work later much more sensitive.
