My dear doc, I've been wondering in my mind some questions regarding fasting, I hope you can enlighten me further how does this scenario would look like.

Let's say I enroll into a 10 day water fast. I have my usual last meal being predominantly made of pure fat, I do my regular 5 steps of elimination process daily, and all goes wonderful. Let's say that by the 5th day we can predict I am well into ketosis and having a beautiful smelly breath (hahaha), and then suddenly I take a Tablespoon of a very sweet juice, and then I continue with the fast for the remaining of days (5 more).

1 - In order for my body to digest the Carbs in that juice, I would like to think I NEED insulin to do that right?, so do I wake up my pancreas in order to do that or given the amount there is another way to process that sugar?

2 - Even do the amount was little, does it take like 12 hours the body to reassure itself there is nothing left on the blood? and then does it jump to glycogen from the liver next?

3 - And lastly, after digesting that sugar how does the body chooses to continue the fast, will it be fat-catabolism or protein-catabolism?

_____

If we would do the same exercise I posted here, but instead of having a spoon of sweet sugar, we would have a tablespoon of avocado?, what happens here?, because even do is fat, here we are dealing with waking up the intestine? how would the body manage that? because even do it's not a bite of protein and we won't produce ammonia, I would think it would be so hard for the intestine to wake up for just one bite. But maybe regardless of the size, the ENERGY that would take to wake up the intestine is huge?, like a car, when you turn it on, it takes a LOT of energy?

Thanks in advance, I guess the more I know how all these work, the easier and fun it's becoming when I embark into a fast, specially I love the first 24 hours knowing exactly what is happening inside of me...

Excellent post dear iLove..

1. No. Your brain and your heart can use glucose without the need of insulin. So while the rest of your body continues burning fat, a SMALL quantity of carbohydrate can be utilised by these organs without major disruption. The problem is more that, while it is in your ketone containing blood, sugars make the blood hyper-osmolar which could lead to cellular dehydration.. but a small volume will be safe. But the taste tells the brain you are eating, which can disrupt the whole fasting metabolism.

2. We cannot put a number of hours to this... we are all different.

3. Metabolism typically switches from carbohydrate to the acid form of carbohydrate, namely amino acids (proteins). But if you exercise and if you did not take a lot of carbohydrate, then the momentum of the fat breakdown will usually help protect your muscles and organs..

Avocado contains many substances but indeed it would be more compatible as part of a fast. It's just the taste, and the need for the whole digestive system to interrupt its holiday, that makes this generally not advisable. Yet if it is what is necessary for you to continue the fast, it is still a lot better than having to terminate or break the fast...

wow, very interesting to know we can use a little amount of sweet and not really use insulin... thanks...

Ok, Doc, so when we use our "mouth wash" during the fast, I can assume then that the TASTE gives the brain a signal that there is SOMETHING in our mouth and trigger juices for digestion to come out as well?...

or

Is there a possibility that YEARS of doing this patron of mouth wash or brushing our teeth the brain "learned and override" the usual signals of preparing the digestive system because over time he learned there will not be food coming in, that this particular taste is more like a tease. :P

Thanks
Carolina

Indeed dear ILove... I think it is a major principle to avoid taste during a fast. Purist perhaps, but it helps dras the line between eating and fasting.

The brain may learn yes, but the "hard wire" part of our instinct will always override the learned part...

If you are attracted to being a purist.
