I felt REALLY good for about 4 days after the dry fast, and then I got completely messed me up again and I have been messed up ever since. Pretty much everything makes me feel bad. Even the mangos from Jourdan were giving me a stomach ache. I have been having a lot of gas and bloating and pain in my liver area for almost 2 weeks now, so I decided to get re-tested for parasites and sure enough I am infected again. I seem to be really suceptible to these buggers and I don't know what to do about it. I am hoping that a longer fractionated dry fast may help to clean me out enough that they will not find my body quite so appealing. My work schedule has not allowed me to do another dry fast yet, so I am just sort of limping along at the moment. My plan is to do a fractionated dry fast and then follow it with periodic shorter fasts (either weekly or monthly) to maintain the benefits.

I am really sorry to hear what you are going through.
I find it really incredible that you got infected again.
Maybe it has something to do with insufficiency of beneficial digestive flora to fight off the bad guys?

Maybe you should do just 1 36 hour dry fast and it will help you to feel better? It is pretty easy to do whether you are working or not.

May compassion to yourself and all beings guide you in your eating, fasting, and lifestyle choices.

I read that people with low secretory IgA are more suceptible to parasites. People with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) have low secratory IgA. I was diagnosed with CFS in 1996 (but probably had it by 1992), but I also know I was first infected with parasites in 1987 during a trip to India. So, the low IgA was probably there first and this made me suceptible to both parasites and CFS. People with CFS have lots of issues with food (much like children with Autism). My CFS has gradually gotten better over the years, mostly because I stopped eating all of the foods that made me deathly tired--I was literally too tired to stand up and take a shower. I think low HCL also makes one suceptible to parasite infections and I definitely have low HCL. I am sure that the right balance of intestinal flora would help too. It is like trying to figure out how the pieces of a puzzle fit together.

I did try a 42 hour dry fast, but it was not long enough to make a difference and I actually felt worse afterwords. I need to be able to continue fasting until my digestive system "clears" and that usually takes 3-4 days minimum in my experience.

Thank you for sharing, Esmee.

I am surprised that you felt worse after 42 hour dry fast.
But I guess each of us has to find our own optimal program.

Alternative Day Fasting Experiment – Review

Acknowledgments:

I would like to express my gratitude to the FastingConnection forum that made it possible for me to become so disciplined in my fasting that I could even conceive of going through an Alternative Day Fasting (ADF) Experiment.

My special thanks to Milena for spreading information about dry fasting and for inspiring by her own example.

My heart-felt gratitude to Esmee and David for reading my crazy long blog posts, for leaving their comments and giving their insights, and for sending me PMs. I felt that somebody really cared and remembered about what I was doing and also I felt the support and encouragement to keep going.

I wish to thank Anne Osborne for answering my questions about her own Alternative Day Fasting that she did for the entire year from January 1st to December 31, 1997. During this year she was taking care of her first son and studying full time in college. The memory of it inspired me to do my absolute best at my job during my fasting days.

I am also grateful to all members of FastingConnection who blogged about their short and long fasts during this time. This was incredibly inspiring and motivating and helped me to create reference points in my mind on how to integrate fasting in one's life in a balanced way.

1) Weight:

In the morning of June 11, after my first fasting day on ADF Experiment my Tanita scale registered 117lb body weight, 55.5% body water, 19.6% body fat.

In the morning of July 9, after my last fasting day on ADF Experiment my Tanita scale registered 118lb body weight, 58.1% body water, 16% body fat.

As you can see, my after-fasting weight went slightly up, my body water content went slightly up, and my body fat content went down.

I am sure that part of the reason why my body fat went down was that I kept exercising in various ways throughout my ADF.

2) My gum infection and the damaged tooth

My gum did not bother me at all during the whole month of ADF Experiment. All the swelling went down. Particularly I noticed the improvement when I began dry fasting on my fasting days, as compared to water fasting (which I did in the very beginning of the month).

My last 2 fasting days were water fasts, and on my last day (which was eating day) I noticed a slight sensation in my gum as if it was going to get inflamed again.

I am now convinced that the dry fasting is the best form of fasting in my situation. I think that in fact water fasting can be a significant waste of time when in comes to gum infection. I am grateful to Milena for bringing to us the information on dry fasting. If not for her, I would probably be doing water fasting now, which would not be giving me the results I needed.

3) Digestion

I made several mistakes during my ADF Experiment that led to 3 days long constipation in the end of the month:

- I began eating a lot of durians on my eating days in between dry fasting days and in the heat of the summer. I think durians and other overt fats could lead to constipation in the dry and hot weather even if I wasn't dry fasting.

- I did not hydrate properly after my dry fasting days. I became somewhat arrogant and I remember that I tried not to drink more than was necessary after breaking the dry fast. I also remember not drinking after my running (after breaking the dry fast), but eating melons instead.

- I dry fasted for 30 to 36 hours and I rehydrated for less than 18 hours for many days in a row. I think this is not sustainable in a long run and another reason for dehydration and constipation.

- Sometimes I would engage in a lot of activity on my dry fasting days which resulted in additional dehydration. I constantly tried to push my body and to see if I could exercise during the dry fast. Once I took a hot shower on the second day of my 2 days dry fast. And then I went on a bicycle to a yoga class.

Future Corrections:

- I will now avoid dehydrating fruits (such as durian, plantains, dates, mameys and all the fruits and other foods that potentially can make me thirsty) on the day before the dry fast.

- I will drink at least 1 liter of water or coconut water (slowly) after breaking my dry fast and before eating anything else.

- I also will consider drinking 1 liter of regular or coconut water upon arising even after regular eating days to hydrate my body and facilitate elimination, particularly on the day before the dry fast.

- In the last hour before the beginning of the dry fast I will try not to focus on eating, but instead to focus on additional hydration.

- I will make sure that I hydrate for at least the same amount of hours as I was dry fasting before fasting again.

4) Headaches

I experienced headaches quite frequently on my dry fasting days during this month. I now think that they were the result of insufficient elimination that eventually led to constipation.

5) Getting Used to Fasting

During this month I definitely became A LOT more comfortable with 1 day (30-36 hours) fasts both water and dry. I now believe that I can fast on any given day on a minute notice. I am very happy to have achieved this.

At some point during this month I felt that I was craving denser foods (such as overt fats) due to all the deprivation that I was going through. I also was stuffing myself on my eating days. I think dry fasting every other day was really tough not only on my body, but also on my mind. In the future I will make sure that I have ample time for rehydrate and refeed in between my fasts (no less than the length of the fast itself).

This month was very difficult for me and a lot of times it felt like pure suffering - on my fasting days as well as on my eating days. I guess this is a necessary stage to go through when one starts on the path of intermittent fasting rotations.

In the end of the month due to dehydration and constipation I began feeling really depressed as well. In the future I will make sure to adjust my fasting and refeeding/rehydrating to avoid this negative feedback from my body.

7) Exercise

I was exercising more in the beginning and in the middle of the ADF than in the end when I began feeling dehydrated, discouraged and tired.

In the future I will not force myself to exercise if I have muscle weakness after fasting.

I will, however, make sure that I walk at least 3 miles on my fasting days and don't skip due to depression, etc.

8) Conclusion

The most difficult part of fasting for me is feeling that I am doing something 'crazy', that my life is 'abnormal' and that fasting is 'abnormal'. This feeling was torturing me every time I was fasting. I longed to go back to 'normal' life and to eat like all 'normal' people.

This was one of the reasons why I wanted to go through 30 days ADF Experiment. I was hoping that it would make fasting more 'normal' for me since I would have to do it for 15 days of the month in all kinds of situations.

This feeling of doing something 'crazy' was increased exponentially during this month. I felt that I was nuts and not eating was nuts, and eating for 1 day in between fasting was nuts too.

But in the end something suddenly switched in my mind. I am dry fasting today and I am feeling completely normal! I don't feel crazy any more. I also feel happy, optimistic and inspired and I've felt so since yesterday when I wasn't even fasting.

Happy Fasting to All ♥ ♥ ♥

P.S.

A list of physical benefits that I noticed over this month of ADF:

1) the acidic morning taste in my mouth that was strong recently despite of not eating overts went away almost completely now (on the nights after my eating days as well as after my fasting days, where as it used to get stronger when I was fasting).
2) the whites of my eyes became a lot whiter
3) my energy levels went up, particularly on my eating days, but even on my fasting days.
5) I stopped getting stuff coming out of the corners of my eyes (even during fasting).
6) I had a sensitivity in one of my teeth and it dissappeared
7) I used to get blood when I flossed between 2 particular teeth (not the same teeth with the infection problem) because the gum would get cut easily and constantly. It does not happen any more.
8) I have a feeling that the eroded spots on my teeth are getting less and less visible.
