Hi Dr. Andre. Wanted to follow up on my previous post prior to you reading and responding to it. The crisis seems to have passed and I'm feeling much better. Have taken the dog on a couple more walks with no incident. I'm writing this at 4:45 a.m. because I couldn't sleep all night (oy), but the intense hip pain has let up significantly and at least I'm comfortable. One of the biggest reasons I've endeavored on this fast is colon issues. I'm a chronic constipation sufferer and have for many years been dependent on products to help me go. Though I quit doing this a number of years ago, I used to (for a few years anyway) abuse laxatives. I didn't understand at the time that they were so destructive. I stopped that and switched to magnesium citrate, which I remain confused about (is it a laxative, or something more natural and safe?). Probably the former because recently the urge to move my bowels has disappeared completely, even with large amounts of magnesium citrate. I've been reading extensively on the subject (books, blogs, doctor websites, etc.) and have come to believe I have nerve damage, maybe irreversible. I'm terribly concerned about this. I think I'm in this mess because of the laxative use and heavy coffee use. When I finish this fast I will never more drink coffee and I plan to supplement each meal with a high-quality pro-biotic. I plan to eat more fermented foods such as kimchi (love it). I'm going to chew my food to death before swallowing (I have no gallbladder). I'm going to completely eliminate wheat and processed foods and eat a mostly raw vegan diet. What I hope to learn from you is whether or not you think my situation can be helped. Is it possible that I have irreversible nerve damage and may never again feel the urge to deficate? Do you think my plan for helping my situation is sound? Would you correct or add to anything I plan to do? I'm looking forward to your response. Thank you as always. By the way, I listened to your audio with the radio host. Very information. Greatly enjoyed it.

Large doses of any source of Magnesium can be laxative dear Annie but because your metabolism is also Magnesium dependent, I prefer to avoid using this nutrient as a laxative and instead concentrate on inert substances even if they are synthetic, like a Macrogol.. at least they don't get absorbed into the circulation.

There's a whole chapter in "Health Won" on constipation and a natural approach to dealing with it.

Probiotics are unnecessary if you have a healthy appendix, as the appendix supplies up to 400 different essential probiotic species; a commercial product only supply one to five or so.

Your overall plan sounds sound.. and seldom is the nerves too damaged to be repaired. But it can take up to 18 months for some nerves o fully regrow so please don't be impatient.

André
