Hi Dr. Andre. Today, day 19, I broke my fast. I was becoming so debilitated with weakness that I felt it was time. I broke the fast with three oz. of papaya and continued to eat three oz. every two hours. I plan to eat cantaloupe tomorrow, maybe increase the quantity to four or five ounces. I will follow the fruit protocol again on day three and on day four I would like to eat a romaine salad and some lightly steamed veges (zucchini, broccoli). What I can't seem to find any information about is when is it appropriate to add a little oil and salt back into the diet? I find myself really craving salt. I don't know if my body is speaking to me or I'm just yearning for salt out of old habit. And what about garlic? Would love to put a little garlic into my salad but wonder if it might be too irritating to my digestive system as early as day four. Any information you could share as to when I can add oils, salt and spices and herbs back into my diet would be really appreciated.

Hi Annie.. your experience illustrates again why I recommend not deciding on the duration of a fast beforehand. I'm sure that papaya tasted heavenly!

Did you do active elimination cycles during your fast? That does tend to keep the elimination symptoms under control.

I suggest wait a bit with powerful tastes to fully exploit the sensitivity of your taste organs (and nose) for the time being. Oils, and in particular proteins, should only be added once you are no longer ketotic. Salt is something I NEVER add to my diet. I won't even buy salt nor spices with salt in them. But any natural spice, well, dear Annie, have them when your body wants them.

Dr. Andre, I practiced the active elimination cycles to the best of my ability, but have been quite debilitated with fatigue for most of the fast. Especially near the end. Today is day two of refeeding and I'm eating four oz. of cantaloupe every three hours and my last meal was a peeled apple. I'm also drinking more water, but only between meals when I know my stomach has emptied. I'm discouraged at the way I feel, horrible. I'm weak, I have a headache, my legs feel achy as if I'm retaining water. I read of other's experiences on their fasts and I haven't read of anyone else having such a hard time of it. I can feel stool in my colon, but have zero urge to defecate (my old nemesis). I wonder if I'm feeling as poorly as I do cuz my colon is toxic and the food I'm introducing is stirring things up. I just don't know. All I can do is carry on carefully refeeding and resting. Do you have patients who experience feeling so poorly post-fast? Thank you as always for your thoughtful response. Lastly, I know you mentioned I shouldn't introduce oil until I'm out of ketosis, but tomorrow I plan to steam zucchini and would like to sprinkle it with this kelp product that's full of herbs, but no salt, but it does contain a little olive oil. I wouldn't be adding much so I'm sure the oil in the product is quite minimal. Would this acceptable?

Something else I should mention that might be relevant is that I'm post-menopausal and take bio-identical hormone replacement. I'm aware that medications get amplified during a fast so I cut my doses in half. A few days ago I started spotting and then bleeding a little more. I usually feel a little bloaty during a bleed and generally feel kinda yukky. Could this have something to do with my malaise, headache, water-retention, etc. (I don't usually get a headache during a bleed, but maybe these are different circumstances).

Indeed dear Annie, sometimes you need several fasts "to completion" to "de-bulk" the toxins in your system before you can "break through" the barriers set up by these. If you do feel retained stool, well, that is one instance in which i do sometimes prescribe a colon flush (which consists of an oral macroglycol solution). I have discussed this several times on these forums.

Actually you can introduce a bit of oil whilst in ketosis.. the oil will simply join the catabolic pathways. It's protein that you need to avoid because catabolism of protein releases ammonia, which is toxic. If it is broken down too quickly (like in a "starving" system, this can overwhelm your liver's ability to convert it to products safe for excretion, such as urea and creatinine.

This term "bio-identical" is of course something the marketing arm of the pharmaceutical manufacturer thought up. The menopause is not a disease and the only thing that the hormones do is to postpone the inevitable. Such postponement tends to increase the severity of the eventual symptoms. Anyway, these hormones are NOT affected by fasting, at least not meaningful so IF you decide to swallow these, there's no reason to reduce them during a fast.
