Hi.

I have started a water fast today, lasting for a minimum of 3 weeks. I fasted previously for 18 days and it was very successful. I want to fast again as I still have weight to lose.

I also have endometriosis, which may affect my fertility. It has been diagnosed by laparoscopy and is moderate to severe, which is sad as I am only 24 and is more common is women over 40. As the condition is caused by cells from the lining of the womb which appear outside the womb, I feel fasting must be able to help with this as your body uses fat and tissues as fuel.

Do you have any experience of successful fasting with patients with endometriosis? Do you have any advice on this particular condition or anything I could do to help with the symptoms?

Thanks, Jen

The best treatment for endometriosis, dear Betty, is pregnancy. Problem is, endometriosis often prevents pregnancy. But fasting may indeed help, depending on the severity of the condition. It is likely advisable to have the condition "debulked" surgically first, but start the fast a day or so before the surgery and continue for a few weeks thereafter. The idea is that surgery damages the endometrial cells outside the womb and then, during the fast, your body is "scavenging" for nutrition, "discovers" these damaged cells and start devouring them.

Please also do a lot of elimination cycles while fasting.

Thanks Doctor. If the gynaecologist suggests surgery when I meet with him next week I will definitely take your advice and fast before and after the surgery. When you are recovering from something invasive like this your body naturally loses appetite and as such I think this will be the perfect time to fast.

What length of time do you normall suggest for fasters who are fasting to help with medical conditions or diseases?

My BMI is in the normal range but weight loss would be an added bonus for me.

I shy away from advising specific times dear Betty, as that advice might interfere with your spontaneous biofeedback. You need to listen to your body and rely on objective criteria such as weight, blood pressure and heart rate.

The ultimate healing fast has been established at about 40 days though. But to achieve that safely you do need considerable reserves.

Fasting before and after surgery does indeed improve the healing process: Your body can "concentrate" on healing and it can do so with human materials instead of trying to build human tissues from plants or animals...

Hi Doctor.

I haven't visited this blog for some time but had to post as I just went for a transvaginal scan to check developments of endometriosis and it has completely disappeared in 2 years. In this time I did one 19 day water fast, adopted a vegetarian diet and now follow 2 day fasts per week. (5:2 diet).

The specialist was astounded today and didn't believe me when I said I thought diet was a factor. He said although theoretically it could disappear, it normally worsens with time.

I am confident I healed myself through adopting the measures above and wish I could share this miracle with others.

Thank you.

Congratulations and thank you for sharing your success. I have had a lifelong hormonal condition - relatively severe and I finally had enough of the medication as it made me sick in its own way.

I started a vegetarian diet and haven't looked back. My doctors didn't want to believe my diet could be a factor but they had no other explanation.

It did not cure me 100% but I would say 80%, I deal with a few symptoms but I am so much better I can hardly believe it.

Again, well done and I too wish women knew that diet can play a considerable part in helping these issues. Its all about choices, I wish someone had at least suggested it to me instead of piling on meds for 15 yrs.

Best, Kira

Well dear Betty, bear in mind that the human uterus is in essence an animal uterus and can therefore respond to any animal Estrogen.. including what is found in the muscles of animals. Thus a vegetarian diet exposes you to less estrogen than what a diet with animal bodies in it does.

And Kira, You are setting an excellent example. Do keep it up. I guess your 80% is a lot better than the 30 odd % medication has to offer...

Of course fasting is the ultimate diet...
