Dr.
I read in one of your older posts that you thought you had seen people gain muscle during a fast. Can you help me understand how this is possible?
best regards
Marc

Indeed Marc, the observation was difficult to explain. We all know your body cannot make amino acids except from other amino acids. During a fast you don't get in any thus to make muscle you need to scavenge from somewhere in the body itself.

But then there are some protein stores available such as serum protein and a reasonable amount in the liver. Since we measured only muscle, there must have been a shift from other tissues... plus, bear in mind when you lose fat: Fat cells are not all fat, there is at least some protein in there also.

Dr.
Dankie!
Great analysis - very helpful. I think Ock must have a system that is fine tuned to doing this. My last fast and this current one have proved to me you can at least tone muscle during a fast, so its good to know we can probably make demands that build it rather than using it for fuel in small amounts.

Marc,

It could be that I do, but I don't know. I do know that I continue to grow fatigued when I run a lot of miles while in the second (or longer) week of a fast. On the one hand I want to push my keytones to the limit, but on the other I don't want to be unwise with regard to their role when fasting.

What I've done is fast during the day and include serious exercise in the afternoon or evening. Before bedtime I have a liquid meal consisting of branch chain amino acids and whey. About 200 calories worth. Since the exercise used much more than 200 calories the meal doesn't knock me out of ketosis. Whether I can build muscle that way I can't say. But I lift more now than I used to. Probably fasting and muscle growth don't happen together. Maybe get to your 'fighting weight' with fasting then start eating to fuel the workouts.

Kapeeoh,

That's where IF is so beneficial. You never have to worry about glucose / glycogen depletion. In my experience, I don't use it all up until around the fourth or fifth days of a no-food fast. But if remaining in ketosis is important to you, then your way is probably best.
