Colonics the alternatives

Doctor you have often commented on how you disapprove of colonics unless absolutely necessary. And this view is also held by mainstream Natural Hygienists. However for anyone wishing to go ahead with a colonic it appears that the 'top down' approach is the safer option rather than the 'bottom up' approach which would be flushing water, coffee etc up the rear end from a gravity fed vessel etc. The 'top down' approach which you recommend is invariably Macrogol which is a synthetic liquid which does not penetrate the walls of the intestine and has no side effects and hence is according to you one of the safest options to use when necessary.

I have recently come across a few other products which can serve to flush out the system and would appreciate your comments on their use/pros and cons and whether any of them would be viable alternatives to Macrogol.

1. Prune juice, works a treat but has a high sugar content.

2. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) at a dose which exceeds bowel tolerance perhaps 5-10gms. Also believed to kill undesirable gut flora, bacteria and fungal overgrowth in the process.

3. Magnesium Citrate: Doctors commonly direct patients to use magnesium citrate to empty the colon before surgery and certain procedures or to relieve occasional constipation. It is a hyperosmotic saline laxative that pulls water from surrounding tissues into the intestine to stimulate intestinal movement.

4. Sodium Thiosulphate also used to remove (chelate) heavy metals from the body and triggers a very powerful colon cleanse.

5. Sea salt in solution. This method is used in yoga schools on an empty stomach. They drink 3-5 glasses of warm salty water and then perform a series of exercises to mobilise the saline solution through the gut. Apparently the salt does not enter the bloodstream.

Thanks for a well composed post David.

1. Prune juice will have unpredictable effects as some people will absorb most of the sugars and others won't; it can also be affected by biorhythms in the same individual.

2. The newer Macrogol preparations actually contains this high dose Vitamin C also so it appears to work synergistically.

3. Magnesium, whether Citrate or Sulphate has been used for generations. Indeed works very similar to macrogols but once again more unpredictable and affected by biorhythms and diet.

4. Thiosulphates are not very good chelators and can be irritant; I'd reserve these for the treatment of (accidental) poisoning.

5. Sea salt is still Sodium Chloride; once in solution it is the same as any other salt, including the normal salt in the blood and tissues. There is NO way of preventing its absorption although a part of any over-dose may remain in the gut. Problem is it will "pull" water from the blood if it is hyper-osmotic and it will be absorbed if it is hypo- or iso- osmotic.

There is still not an absolute ideal. Yet all of these alternatives are superior to the aesthetically displeasing idea of sticking a tube into the rectum...

David,

I don't know if you are just researching different things, but I thought I'd give you my input on colonics. I used to get them very often, in Southern California. They're huge there.

I had tremendous success. I had them up the rear. Never did coffee, but a few times had a pro-biotic infused into the water, and sometimes even garlic. The colonics always broke up gas and mucous, and I was completely flushed when I left. To me, they are a perfect way to start a fast.

Hope this info is informational/interesting/helpful !
