40 Day Water Fast - Looking for Support

Lisaism created the topic: 40 Day Water Fast - Looking for Support
Hello,

(I posted this in another thread, but I think I'll document my progress here)

I am new to posting on this forum, but I have been visiting and reading posts for more than a year.

In the past 4 or 5 years I have completed several fasts. A handful of 5 day WF, a few 10 day WF, and 1 (unintentional) 30 day water/juice fast. This last fasting period occurred about 9 months ago and correlated with a very intense spiritual experience.

This experience took me far outside of my comfort zone, and truthfully it was a bit frightening. In an effort to "ground" myself a bit, I began to eat heavily and abandoned all meditative practices.

Unfortunately, this resulted in a significant weight gain of about 25 lbs. Now that I am ready to resume my meditation routine, I find that my body and mind both feel very sluggish. Where I once was able to meditate comfortably for 3+ hours a day, I now struggle with a single 60 minute session.

My initial goal is 10 days, but if all goes well I would like to keep extending up to 40 days.

My overall goals are as follows:

- Weight loss (starting weight is about 165/ I am 5'4") - so I have plenty to lose

- Reduce amount of sleep I need (I am up to about 10-12 hours a day from my previous quota of 5-6)

- Heal a bout of chest congestion that has persisted for over 3 weeks.

- Heal (or at least observe any changes in) a spot of skin cancer on my shoulder.

- Increase my ability to meditate long time periods comfortably.

I would very much appreciate any support and company I can get from this community.

My fast began @ 5pm 10/1

Lisa,

All I can say is wow! Best wishes with this incredible goal. I'm not sure I could go that long. Good luck with this. :)

Ockeghem- I'm not so sure at this point either. But hey, I'm going to take it one day at a time. All I have to do is not eat today - 40 times!

Thank you for the support!

Lisa,

Hey, I like the "All I have to do is not eat today - 40 times" bit. That seems like a wise way to think of it. :)

Lisa, haha! The same here. And on day 1 I talk in 'hours' instead of days :). Have fun - 40x!

Shant- Exactly! As "pop culture" as it may sound, there really is only this moment. The past and the future do not exist. They are only constructs of our imagination.

I'm not eating right now. That means all I have to do to succeed is not change anything. What could be easier than that?! :woohoo: (this is how crazy I imagine I sound when I talk like this)

Thanks for the support!

Lisaism to my ears it is not crazy talk but sanity personified. However I do go along with the one day at a time attitude and that would ideally also include being in the present moment when you transition even if the transition happens unexpectedly. And also be aware that there is a very well tried and tested alternative to what we call 'Epic fasts' and that is intermittent fasts. Fasting a certain number of hours each week DOES amount to an 'Epic fast' over a longer period of time. Something for you to mull over after your long fast. And I wish you success on many different levels with what you are currently putting into action.

David- Thanks, I do try to present myself as sane as possible. :P

I would very much like to adopt some form of IF as a lifestyle once I've completed this fast.

If it weren't for some of the spiritual aspects to my fasting, I would likely forgo the challenge of such a long fast (in addition to, as you pointed out, the transition involved) and begin practicing IF now.

Thank you very much for the well wishes :)

Keep posting your thinking, I like it! It's definitely my language! :) that's something I can actually grasp "don't eat today, 40 times"...that breaks it down for me. Thanks!

Lisa,

Ditto. I've mentioned a couple of times how IF is very intriguing to me. I plan on giving it a serious go as well once my current fast is completed.

Wow! What a night I had. :silly:

My evening meditation went amazing, and I couldn't be more pleased with my beginning efforts of this fast.

I slipped effortlessly into a very deep state of meditation and when I came out almost 2 hours had passed! :cheer:

I won't go into all that I experienced during the meditation (so I don't sound like this :woohoo: ), but I am very excited to have pushed past some of my fear of the unknown.

I am so extremely grateful for all of your comments. Thank you.

Hmmm, that's strange because when I tried to post it I got a message that the "server had reached its resources" or something like that.

Anyone know how to delete it?

I was very excited :P

Lisa,

I often get messages on various Boards that indicate a post of mine hasn't taken, but then I see that all of my attempts have in fact been posted! So I find myself having to delete a couple of entries every now and then.

Alas the site is getting too busy for the current hosting plan so you are only allowed now to post one post per week..... (just kidding) But we will have to solve the issue.

Shant- You know, I really haven't even been paying attention. But now that you mention it, I think it has started to clear up a bit. I'm sure the lack of dairy has helped. Thanks for checking in on me! :)

I spent today visiting a local Ashram. I got some pointers on my asanas and did a little volunteer work. Usually this would energize me, but I left early feeling quite drained.

Then I went to visit my mother... always a little bit draining. ;)

Overall, I'm feeling pretty good. The last couple of days have flown by.

I went to jiu-jitsu class tonight, but our instructor was absent. So, while a couple of my daughters practiced techniques with their brother, I ran around the Dojo (about six miles) and felt great. I know the glycogen and glucose are gone, but since I was in a 'controlled' environment (inside, no elements to be concerned about) I don't think I can know for certain how increased mileage will affect me until a few more days have passed.

Best continued wishes to all whom are fasting. :)
