I came across this today which also backs The Doctor's ideas on supplements:

"Nutritional supplements could make things worse. It is possible that the fermenting gut explains this. Instead of nourishing you, supplements nourish the bugs. (especially in the upper gut) This encourages their growth and therefore fermentation! This makes sense because from an evolutionary perspective mitochondria are derived from bacteria,. Perhaps what mitochondria like bacteria will also thrive on."

this was really interesting and entertaining, but I have no way to afford or grow all these great perfect foods with all the nutrients... Unfortunately, I have also had an inability to maintain continuous will power against eating junky foods that contain sugar, bad fat, chemicals, etc. I have always found that vitamin and mineral supplements and some herbs do in fact supplement and counteract the bad foods to a degree (especially simple things like calcium to bind to the bad fats). I KNOW it would be ideal to have all this great food rather than having to rely on some processed foods and giving in to junk foods part of the time. Even when my income was high and I could afford organic foods, not all of what was available in this part of the world (where it's winter 6-7 months a year and stuff that is shipped in frankly tastes like crud) was much better than frozen or processed stuff. If I ever live on a paradise island with fruit dropping from the heavens 12 months a year, I might still need some supplements.

Wag totally agree that much of what is labeled organic is no better than frozen or processed food. I found out the other day that my farm supplier of organic free range eggs feeds them organic soy and rusk. Is this what chickens eat in their natural environment? On a brighter note there are always wild herbs to eat wherever you are and there are plenty of books on wild foods. Okay so it involves going out for a walk in the woods or fields and hedgerows and picking them. That is what I do periodically.

Dear Wag, if you shop around a bit, you will discover bargains on fresh produce all over. Interesting that "organic" food is so much more expensive, whilst they are so much cheaper to produce! Personally I simply look at, smell and taste fresh food and don't make much of the "organic" label.. even synthetically fertilized fruits and vegetables are still vastly superior to the "supplements" that are produced by processing them into oblivion!

You could also think of cultivating a small vegetable patch. It has been demonstrated that you could keep a person alive on a mere 2 square meters of well tended garden. And working in the soil helps negative ions to be conducted from your body to the earth.

And David's suggestion of going for a walk.. well, that holds a host of other benefits at the same time... a host of sensory experiences and a bit of exercise...

You won't find me allowing a "supplement" into my body... for that, I am too fond of my excellent health.
