Today marks the beginning of a new fast. I have reaped the benefits of 2 21-day fasts in the past, but I let awful habits and life stress take me back to obesity, low self-sabotage, and feeling hopeless about a painful binge-fast cycle.

I know others relate, and maybe this journal can help someone other than me. A little more accountability is good for everyone, right? I will journal here everyday.

So here goes. Day 1. I'm hanging in there. Mind over matter. :)

Acmaragh506,

Good luck! Accountability is good. It's one of the reasons I often mention on this Board what I am going to do with my fasts before I actually complete them. :)

Areas of specialty and interests: Canon and Fugue; Greek and Latin language and literature; Marathoning and Ultramarathoning; Martial Arts (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Shotokan {Kissaki-Kai} Karate); Medieval and Renaissance music notation; Television series (All In the Family; Charmed, Dark Shadows, Lost, The Outer Limits, Roswell, Star Trek); Theology; Twelfth- and thirteenth-century conductus,...

Thank you very much, David! So far day 1 has gone well. I took a brief 20 minute walk in the gorgeous sunshine, and have been drinking water to thirst. I will go on another walk later today, after which I will complete an elimination cycle.

Day 2 has begun, and I have decided to make it a soft dry fast day. So, I will not ingest water, but will allow myself to wash my hands and shower. This has worked well for me at the beginning of previous fasts.

A recent article I read about a book entitled Brain over Binge left me with a new take on my food addiction, that may be of interest to anyone viewing this journal:

The biggest issue with food addiction is resisting urges, or cravings. Most conventional wisdom suggests that these urges represent a deeper underlying issue, such as an emotional need you are attempting to meet with food. This author suggests that instead, she found success in rejecting that notion, and instead viewing her urges as "neurological junk". In other words, something that did NOT represent a deep need, and could easily be ignored accordingly.

In order to keep myself calmer at the beginning of this journey, I am choosing NOT to weigh and measure myself for awhile, and to go simply on how I feel. So far, so good. Day 2. :)

Day 3 has begun well. Last night I had some cravings, which I chose to ignore and distracted myself by calling a friend.

Today I will continue dry fasting, along with some light stretching and possibly a walk this evening.

No weighing or measuring yet, but I feel comfortable thus far and have slept well. Day 3!

I love the concept of neurological junk so much more empowering than self victimisation. Well done for day 3 :)

Thank you David! It is a very different take on things, but a welcome release from feeling as though I can't figure out what is really "wrong". Let us hope it still feels that way in a week!

Day 4 has been ok so far. I felt a bit restless last night and so I awoke later than usual. I also have slight back pain, which I hope is a good sign of my body at work!

Today I will hydrate, and do light cleaning around the house. I have gotten to day 4 recently, and then aborted the fast. So, I am praying to stay the course this time. Think well wishes for me! Day 4.

Day 5! I had a close call yesterday with hunger, because my partner came by and ate dinner at my apartment. It is not easy to handle, since I live alone and keep my kitchen bare. However, he very sweetly ate foods that I dislike to support me. :-)

Still having slight back pain and odd sleeping hours. These are fast symptoms I recognize though, so they are of little concern. I overcame Day 4, and though measuring is immaterial now, I visually notice that my thighs are a touch smaller already.

Here is to Day 5!

Oh great and well done on the partner for his solidarity. If you massage the thighs they will shrink faster as more blood will flow to that area and the body will take nourishment from it. Good luck with day6

I need an accountability partner! This is Day 1 of my fast. Started fasting last night (after dinner... and a couple brownies...)

Anyone want to be my accountability partner?

Hi lauraliz413, good luck! I have found it helpful just to post in a thread each day, so I recommend that. Feel free to post here as you go along as well.

Hi there, you can do it! Physically I went for walks and tried to occupy my time. When I have cravings, I try to honestly ask myself if I am hungry, or bored, lonely, etc. Anything other than hungry should not be fixed by eating, because quite simply emotional eating is my whole problem.

And as for actual hunger, I remind myself that I have plenty of reserves to keep my body going. It is not easy, but remind yourself that this is your choice. And, that nothing really worthwhile comes easy. :-)

Day 6 has arrived, and I feel very blessed to have be nearing the completion of a week. I have struggled to stay patient in the past, and have to remind myself daily that fasting is a process. It takes time to grow strong enough to resist cravings and urges, and to avoid situations that are not conducive to fasting.

I will be doing some work today, as I am still able to focus well and have energy. I will also take a walk later today, and it is definitely time for another elimination cycle!

Day 6. Almost a week down. :-)

Day 7!!! I am so excited to reach this point; it is the most progress I have made on a fast in months! I have had a little trouble falling asleep, but I suspect it's because I need less sleep while I fast.

I have also been blessed to have a walking buddy who goes on hour-long walk three times a week. It has really pushed me to keep up with walking, and it benefits me greatly!

Here is to day 7, and tomorrow, week 2!
