Hi,

I'm new to this forum and I'm also new to fasting. I've gone two days without food before, but not like this.

I'm on day three of a water fast of undetermined length. (I figured I'd see how I went.)

I know some purists say that you can ONLY have water, but I have had some unsweetened herbal tea to break up the monotony. It hasn't made me feel hungry.

The first couple of days were pretty easy and I've lost a couple of pounds (probably in water weight), but today, I'm starting to feel the weakness in my muscles. I can only compare it to the weakness one might experience if they were late getting their lunch. I haven't had to withdraw from coffee, but I do take medication for epilepsy and since I'm on the lowest possible dose I can be on safely, I will not be stopping that for the duration of the fast as it is what gives me total control over my seizures.

I am wondering if it's going to get worse or easier from here; whether I need to drink some juice and then resume my water fast, or whether I should stop it completely. I'm reluctant to stop and I don't really want juice. I feel that the water alone has been doing me good.

It sounds to me like you are on the transition from glucose burning to fat burning. I would encourage you to keep it up and see how you feel tomorrow. I wouldn't worry about an occasional unsweetened herbal tea. I have had that on a water fast without any problems. It's best to do water only though. A juice fast is a legitimate thing, although it is not a real fast, rather, a juice diet. For some people that is a good introduction to "fasting" and it gives them confidence. Water only signals to your body that it is time to switch to the reserves for food. I suggest you get some Ketostix to test to see if your body has switched to fat burning. Once you are fully transitioned to fat burning, you will feel better. However, there is still some weakness in the extremities. I can't remember exactly why, but it has something to do with the body conserving energy. As a hairdresser, I find that my arms get really weak when I am blow drying, I think because my arms are above my heart. Also, if I have to go up a couple flights of stairs, I get really winded, a lot more than a normal eating day.

My advice, is to see how you feel tomorrow. I've always regretted when I broke a fast too early, but never when I added on a day or two. Good luck to you and stick around!

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for your reply.

I have however just had some juice (before I saw your message). I had to consider the fact I have to lift my baby up and also not to fall when I hold her, so I guess I've broken the fast, BUT I will give it another go very soon. I agree with what you said about feeling bad about breaking a fast, but if nothing else, I've given my body a break and it's just had an injection of good nutrients.

You mentioned going up stairs having an effect on you and I noticed that yesterday. I felt almost winded from it. For the last 24 hours I'v also noticed that I my heartbeat was very audible to me - much like when I was pregnant and pumping more blood.

I did wonder if another reason I felt weak was because my blood pressure had dropped. I don't have a BP machine here, but can usually tell a drop in my blood pressure. It's usually on the lower end normally anyway. 90/53 for example. Sometimes lower.

Where abouts can you find ketostix? I'm due to go back to the States in a couple of months, but right now I'm in NZ and I don't know that the pharmacy would have those.

Thanks for the insight and difference between burning glucose and fat.

Thanks Gsonic.

I believe I've actually read that article once before, but I was reading so much stuff that I probably forgot about the part where it said mentioned locomotor weakness.
