I understand that a little weight gain is to be expected after a fast, but I want to know if there is a way to break my fast with minimal weight gain. I am on day 4 of my 40 day water fast and from past experience I know that cabbage is a HUGE no-no for breaking the fast (I gained 9 lbs in one day and was constipated for 4 days after breaking a 10 day fast with cabbage, please don't try it). I'd really appreciate the sound advice and I love reading about personal experiences. Anythings better than learning how NOT to break a water fast the hard way again. Thanks!!!

Hello Horn,

There will always be some water retention weight gained during the transition. However we generally don't recommend these lengthy fasts unless they are done under supervision by a competent health professional. A very important part of a fast is the transitioning and that too should be done over a reasonable period of time. There is an explanation on how to break a fast on the FAQ page and there are also various forum threads. The easiest way to find them is to Google "breaking fast" or "fasting transition" followed by "fasting connection". This will list all the results for that topic. I would like to finish up by saying that I really don't recommend you fast for more than a few days unless under medical supervision as it can be potentially dangerous not to mention the fact that one can gain a lot of weight rapidly post fast which is not healthy for the body. The best way to deal with this in my opinion is to adopt a intermittent fasting lifestyle which achieves the same results over a longer period of time but is a much safer way to go about achieving your goals.

Cabbage being high fiber requires a lot of water to digest. This can leave you dehydrated as water is bound up with cabbage in the intestines. Dehydration causes constipation. Breaking a fast with soup makes more sense, imo.

Personally I like the idea of breaking the fast with dilute freshly juiced fruit, then incorporating some veggies in the juice. Slowly, making progress to solid food. However I’m not usually that disciplined, so I fast with the expectation to regain half the weight I lost while fasting.

David, thanks for you post but my question was not on how to break a fast but how to break on "without gaining excess weight". I have done my research on who to break a fast but I was hoping to get some insight from those who've been where Im going and tried different things to see what works and doesn't. I know all of our bodies are different but I like learning from the experiences of others. Also, you kept mentioning the safeness (or lack thereof) of doing an unsupervised fast. I WILL BE SUPERVISED!!!!! :cheer: by GOD!!! My prayer is that my God (according to my beliefs and personal conviction) will keep me safe and in-tune with my body throughout the fast to avoid any harm. After all, He made it (also my personal belief).

Ebony,

adopt a intermittent fasting routine post fast will certainly help avoid the usual pitfalls of rapid weight gain. Providing the fast days are regular and no more than a few days interval. However as I have not personally completed a 40 day water fast you had better ask board members who have such as Ockeghem,Cfs, Milena and Ben and of course The Fast Doctor. Just for your interest check out what Edgar Cayce has to say about keeping off the pounds.

Thanks David! I broke my fast :( boo hoo I know. I made some SLAMMIN' homemade mac-n-cheese, green beans, fried pork chops, and iffy bread for Sunday dinner and fed all my guests and my whole family....THEN I BROKE!!!!!!!!! (it was so worth it though, I'll tell you). Anywho, I am fasting tomorrow and I was looking into the 010 IF and it looks pretty interesting, i always thought about doing something like that but i didn't know that it was actually a "thing".
